I have a company car at the moment but am considering coming out of the scheme. I'm looking at the pros and cons.

I need an estimate of what it might cost me to insure a car .. but all the websites which calc insurance need the details of the car I want to insure, which I havent decided to buy yet!

. Ive been insured on company scheme upto now so havent built up any no claims.. I ve had 2 prangs in the last 5 years .Blush . Anyone any advise?

Presumably you have SOME idea of the kind of car you might want to drive? Find something similar, plug the details into money supermarket

See thats so obvious now I think about it.
Just realised how sad my life is to be sorting out hypothetical car insurance on a friday night . < shakes head an goes to get wine>

Definitely get yourself on auto trader, find something you think you might buy, used the number plates to get some quotes. If running cost is a major factor you can target insurance groups, mpg, car tax and C02 emissions on auto trader in their advanced filters.

Your company will also give you a statement which says how long you have had insurance with them for and your NCD, although if you've had a couple of prangs that may not be much!

You need to decide what type of car you want and then the price depends on all sorts of other factors; your age, how long you've had your licence, previous claims, type of work you do, how far you drive in a year, engine size etc etc etc so I don't think anyone on here can help you with a figure unless we know more about you (which you shouldn't divulge on a public forum!). Maybe try phoning someone like Direct Line and see if they can advise you?

I have just helped my Dad with leaving a company car scheme and having his own. AXA allowed his business car no claims discount on his policy - so 16 years - which naturally reduced his policy had it been classed as 0 with other companies. Not all companies accept company car no claims so keep that in mind as if you can't validate, you'll pay more in the long run as they might cancel your insurance which you could need to declare going forward.

I've just done exactly this. I've insured a Mini Cooper for about £250, with no no claims, which I'm pleased with, but I am quite old (47) with a clean driving licence.

When I was looking around, I just used the reg no of a typical car on sale on gumtree to get my quote. Go compare etc asked me how many claims free years I had as a company car driver. Also putting DP on made it cheaper, even though he's got a claim and points on his record.
