Car insurance for teenagers

DD is 17 and booked to take test in Christmas holidays.

We are planning to buy a 1.2l Fiat Uno with me (experienced driver) as the registered keeper and both of us as named drivers.

We are happy to have black box, mileage restriction, curfew etc etc.

We live in SW London.

Any suggestions for which company/policy to use?

You can try comparison sites and also specialist brokers do chi as Adrian Flux.

It will be a least a few thousands though.

You cannot both me just named driver, one has to be the main driver who will be the policy holder. That has to be your DD as it will mainly be her driving.

Also note, check about the registered keeper as some places will charge a an additional premium if the registered keeper is not the main policy holder (I.e. main driver). It may be better to just have your DD as the registered keeper.

Our DS has been driving for a couple of years.
Having myself (driving 25+years) as main driver made little to no difference. It also meant that he couldn't build up his NCD.
Can't remember how much it was in the end but was over £1300 and that was with a black box.
We also had to have him as the registered keeper.

When our 3 learned to drive, we bought a less than 1 litre car. Insured it in their name(s) with us as named drivers. That way they built up their own NCD and us being on the policy brought the price down considerably. The car passed from child to child as they reached driving age.

Why the Fiat Uno? Is it a low group car? Have you run some quotes? Look for cars for sale on Gumtree etc and use the registration plate to run a dummy quote just to check what it could be.

If it's a car that's attractive to young drivers, it could be expensive to insure even if it is a low insurance group due to crash history, I think the Corsa suffers from this problem.

If you're looking to reduce insurance costs, something like the Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107 or the Skoda Citigo, VW Up or Seat Mio are probably cheapest.

RAC are offering 1200 with a black box. That’s with me as the main driver and keeper and Dd as a named driver. Does that sound ridiculous?

If your DD is going to drive the car more often than you then she has to be the main driver otherwise you’re breaking the law.

Our kids were insured with Ingenie for their first year after they passed their tests. They specialise in insuring young drivers, they have to have a black box but there’s no curfew with regard to when you can drive the car. You, also, get a reduction in your premium if you drive carefully

Does it need to be that car? Low-power two-seater cars are often fairly cheap to insure for young drivers - as much as anything because they can’t cram all of their mates into it and run wild.

My first car was a Smart Fortwo insured with Sterling, and it was less than £500 a year. I think Sterling is part of the Flux Group who offer several specialist policies.

I will drive it every day - she will use it for sports training and fixtures at the weekend. So I will clock up more hours (in London traffic) but she might cover more mileage (travelling to another county for a match). Which identifies main driver - hours or miles?

2 seater won’t take massive cricket bag...
