To ask for board or not ?

I'm really torn whether or not to ask my ds23 for board money at the moment. So as not to drip feed these are the circumstances. He has just finished a year off and is due to start a masters. His plan was to work for a year to try and earn enough to live off for a year as he would have been moving to the uni ( 60 miles away ). He was fortunate enough to get a well paid job and I asked for board money which worked out as about 8% of his wage which he duly paid every month. I know he will still have an active a social life as is possible in these times and will probably earns bits of money working for his dad and brother . He was earning more than me and about the same as my dh, we are not big earners. So now his course is predominantly online ( he will commute one day a week) until at least January so he is staying at home. So do I ask for board money when it will be coming out of his savings or not ?

How much savings does he have? Is he eligible for student loans? Does he buy his own food? Cool for himself etc?

Depending on savings (and what those savings are for), and if he’s eligible to take out a student loan it would be reasonable to ask for a small amount towards gas/electric/food bills (providing he doesn’t buy his own food). But as a student myself, we’re generally a skint bunch. Student loan is around £550 a month, it barely covers food/bills/rent. Socialising and any sort of luxuries went out the window even before Covid

He has sorted the loan for the course so that's added to the loans for the 3 year course. It was living expenses he was saving for including rent. I'm not sure exactly how much he has saved , I know he wanted to have saved more but he was quite generous with everyone's Xmas presents last year and has had a holiday. We buy all the food but if there was something he fancied he would go and buy the ingredients and make it himself. He runs a car but his dad pays the insurance.
