WARNING - Tesco Clubcard Prices - be VERY careful

In Tesco today, my clubcard didn't go through first time but my bank card did.

The cashier told me she couldn't add the clubcard to the transaction, that I should go to customer services to claim my points but I'd have to pay the higher prices and they couldn't refund the money ! Errr, what? I don't think so....

Having explained forcefully to customer services and the manager that I wasn't happy, I had to have every item of a week's shop individually refunded, and then have the whole lot rung through again. The receipt did not show how much I'd been overcharged but after 6 or 7 minutes it proved to be £1.10 which, ok isn't much but could have been more.

Is this even legal? Can they charge different people different prices? And in a climate when so many people are struggling or being made redundant, what the hell are they playing at?

So be really really careful to put your Clubcard through BEFORE you do anything else.

@whirlwindwallaby

I agree ot was your fault for trying to scan two cards together, if the bank card went through, the clubcard then wouldn't as the shop had been paid for. Don't understand why they had to refund and rescan the lot though rather than just the clubcard offers. Is it to do with adding the points as well?
I'm guessing no one knew what items were discounted. There's too many for the shop to be sure, and op had no idea what she should have saved so presumably didn't eother

I didn't think of that, I think I'd always remember if I'm buying something on offer, and the approximate price of everything else I normally buy!

BingeOnChocolate · 08/10/2020 19:40

I have noticed that since the introduction of Clubcard points the 'normal' prices have increased. The yellow label prices are what I previously paid as standard!

Lurkingforawhile · 08/10/2020 19:48

Our delivery last week they had missed all the Clubcard discounts and the points. I complained and got refunds. And then yesterday they sent me a £10 voucher. So I was annoyed but happy now!

I use the scan as you shop 'scanner', so I know my clubcard has been read at the start.

You can hand the scanner over to the cashier if you want to go through a normal big checkout, rather than the small self serve ones.

Also, our Tesco petrol station now lets me scan my clubcard on the actual digital screen of the pump, rather than hold it lower down & find the red cross.

I really need to get out more Shock

*I realise NONE of this is really relevant to OPs post.

@Sleepingstandingup That's the issue. In the past, if the clubcard didn't go through, your receipt said you could have earned 50 pints or whatever. You took the receipt to CS and they added them.
But now that it's cash rather than points, the Tesco receipt doesn't detail how much the difference is, although obviously they could.

At the moment, the only way to find out what the difference is, get CS to refund everything, and then put the whole lot through again. That's the problem. The difference could be £30 but you can't tell.

So do you not get points anymore?

SleepingStandingUp · 09/10/2020 10:28

Tbh yours think you could have saved £2.10 would be a good incentive to get people to sign up

whirlwindwallaby · 09/10/2020 11:05

You still get points. The clubcard offers are just offers that you need a clubcard for, in addition to the points. For example, there was money off grapefruit a week or so ago, 35p instead of 50p, and Carte D'or icecream, £1.75 instead of £3.50.

markzuckerbergsgreytshirt · 09/10/2020 11:23

For all the posters aghast at the saving of £1.10 and wondering why you'd go to the bother of getting it...that can be a huge amount of money to some people!

Ever gone out to buy food with only £5 in your wallet? Then you'll be fully aware of how much a difference a pound or so makes to what you can buy.

OP I don't blame you for getting your discount however the issue was caused by you not presenting your loyalty card first before payment was taken.
