How can I earn more money from home - nothing left after essentials

Whatalready · 03/10/2020 20:37

Thanks for reading this. I know that I am lucky to be able to pay my mortgage, bills and direct debits and I have a lovely family. I have a lot to be thankful for and I count my blessings every day so please don't think I am complaining here.
But, there is nothing left for anything 'extra'. We struggle for holidays (certainly can't go every year) and Christmas etc. and spontaneous spending is just out of the question. We are getting on top of credit card debt and pretty proud of that but I would love to be able to save for a treat for us all.
I do work already but I would like to earn a bit extra from home (evenings, weekends) when the kids are in bed or occupied. I have sold lots of things on eBay already. I have been doing matched betting for the past two years but the opportunities are dwindling to almost nothing now.
I work in admin but I have an english degree and wonder if there is anything that it could be used for in my spare time.
Any ideas very gratefully received.

People on here rave about Matched Betting, and I have a colleague who does it - she's earned 3 grand since July!! Have a look at the Matched Betting threads on here. Good luck!

Whydotheycallyoured · 03/10/2020 20:45

Look up Team Profit for matched betting and Team Casino for low risk casino on Facebook. I have made £15k tax free over the past 18 months doing a combination of both and starting with a £200 bankroll.

Whatalready · 03/10/2020 20:54

I have been 'gubbed' by a lot of the bookies over the last two years so I am limited to less and less. I have always been a bit wary of the casino offers in case I lose money! I am in awe of you whydotheycallyoured. How on earth did you do that??? Please share. I have been on oddsmonkey and finding it a bit flat.

Ha ha this feels like a thread advertising matched betting!

There's a thread called £10 a day - ideas to earn an £10 a day (I think matched betting features) perhaps you should try that out?

Whydotheycallyoured · 03/10/2020 21:52

I started off with matched betting but found it tricky to fit in with looking after my little one. I did the Team Casino week free trial and it converted me to casino. Now I pay £15 a month subscription for their service. Follow their instructions exactly and track all your profits and losses. Just because you’re sports gubbed doesn’t mean you’re casino gubbed with that bookie. It’s worth checking. Plus there are casino only bookies. I set up auto spins for each offer and can get a lot done during nap times, in the evening while watching tv etc etc.

You can do proof reading and editing work on up work and fiver

Private English coaching?

BarbaraofSeville · 21/10/2020 08:01

Have you reduced all your bills - switched your gas and electric, broadband etc? Swapped from full Sky/Virgin to Netflix instead?

You need to be on introductory deals and switch at the end of the contract, or phone for a loyalty discount. We had the introductory Virginmedia deal for about £25 pm and at the end of the contract, it would have gone up to £49 pm but I phoned and asked if they had any deals to stay or else I would just go somewhere else for another deal and they did it for £28 pm fixed for another 18 months. I could have switched and got it down to £23/4 pm with another provider, but doing that was far easier. Frees up more money for disposable income.

You can also get free money for switching bank accounts. Have a look on moneysavingexpert for their money makeover and also sign up to the weekly email for ongoing tips.

Are you a single parent or are you available to babysit in the evenings when your partner is at home to look after the DC? Although people probably aren't going out as much at the moment?

There's massive demand for tutors, especially 11+ tutors, which you could potentially do with your English degree.

If friends wife doesn't is a teaching assistant, however for extra money she helps child with English and reading. Advertised via gumtree, and charges £10 p/h group session (max 3 children), and £15 p/h 1-2-1.

With the 11+, the child needs a to cover 4 areas in the exam, 2 of which are verbal and comprehension. You would get less interest with just covering these 2 areas, but there is demand.

We were paying £20 p/h for out DS for a 2 hour group session covering English and comprehension. The person was recommended, very experienced and confident. We left soon after because there were 13 children in the class, and I felt that the classes should be smaller. But she was making £520 from the 2 hour sessions.

As your just starting out you would obviously have to charge less, and possibly could even offer a free starter lesson. Most lessons have moved online, but.you could use zoom or google hangouts. It would require preparation on your behalf before lesson, and you would have to provide a quite atmosphere.

Do let.me know if you require further information.

tutoring is definitely good with potential to go up to £30 to £50 per hour when you have experience.

Also, on Prolific Academic you can get paid £7-£10 per hour to complete research studies (e.g. questionnaires) - you just log on and earn any time which is convenient.

KrakowDawn · 21/10/2020 12:32

Steer completely clear of anything involving betting/gambling! Or anything requiring money put in up front.

Tutoring English via zoom/Skype would work with evenings, and small children in bed, and can be very lucrative. Familiarise yourself with the AQA and EdExcel English Language and English Literature specifications and see what you can offer.

KrakowDawn · 21/10/2020 12:34

And 11+ tutoring is £40 an hour in my area!
Exceptionally competitive entrance though, and without experience you'd not get clients.

parietal · 22/10/2020 18:28

TEFL (teaching english as a foreign language) can also be done online and flexibly but you need to qualify first.

JoJoSM2 · 23/10/2020 09:18

I also think tutoring could be an option. Ideally, you’d need to qualified but if you charge a little less that qualified and experienced tutors, you should still be able to get some clients.

Have you also looked at your essentials to make sure you’re getting the best deals? Saving a tenner on electricity, a fiver on a weekly shop, getting a bit of cash back etc can add up to say £100 per month and, within a year, you’d have enough for a cheap UK holidays for the family.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 23/10/2020 14:12

What I do is order high end/luxury beauty offers with free samples and send the offers back for refund and sell the samples on ebay.
If the store ask for the samples back too I would send them but most of the time they don't and then it's mine to keep.. or sell on more like
Selling the high end beauty and makeup samples this way I make 100-200 pounds amonth

KrakowDawn · 23/10/2020 14:17

So you're actually stealing a company's marketing merchandise and making money off that?
Wow.

londonscalling · 23/10/2020 16:37

@justasmalltownmum

That's an odd suggestion! Not everyone can do this. It's not as simple as that as it's a skill. By the way "proofreading" is one word not two!

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 23/10/2020 17:04

@KrakowDawn

So you're actually stealing a company's marketing merchandise and making money off that? Wow.
I don't see it as theft. I am given a gift to keep. If they ask for the gift back, I return.

Yeah made quite a lot out of it.

KrakowDawn · 23/10/2020 17:15

It is theft, because you're intentionally defrauding them- you only order for the samples and intend to return the goods minus samples where you can get away with it.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 23/10/2020 17:24

Its not theft, it's a gift. If they care, they can have them back. If they don't care, it's a gift for me to keep. You can call it theft if it makes you feel better but in my opinion it is not.
EmmaC78 · 23/10/2020 20:29

Matched betting does work. I don't spend that much time doing it but have made about £800 in 4 months. You could make more though if you put the time into it. I started off with about £30.

Whatalready · 01/11/2020 08:44

Thanks to everyone who wrote! I have an english degree but no teaching qualifications. I don't have the time/freedom/money to do a PGCE. Is there another route? I would be happy to offer my help and don't expect big rates. I would be chuffed to get £10 per hour!!

Cheesypea · 01/11/2020 09:14

You sound like your doing very well op. Once you've paid off your credit card debt you should have a bit more money coming in. Do you have a spare room to rent out? My shopping bill has come down since buying larger packs of everything in the supermarket.

ithoughtitwouldbeokay · 01/11/2020 09:14

@CloudsCanLookLikeSheep, it really doesn't matter what you think, it's what the law says that counts.

What you are doing IS illegal. You order these items with the intention of keeping the free samples to sell if the company don't ask for them back.

The intent is there, it IS theft.
