Free school meals

Hi, I am currently claiming UC ( single mum- 2 school aged kids) , I was claiming this alongside PT work and then furlough, which has now finished. Does anyone know what income is looked at with regards to free school meals, is it previous tax year? or based on current income?

It’s not based on income. Do you get housing benefit and council tax reduction? If not you’re not eligible.

Your child may be able to get free school meals if you get any of the following:
• Income Support
• income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
• income-related Employment and Support Allowance
• support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
• the guaranteed element of Pension Credit
• Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
• Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
• Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

Thanks everyone, I fall into the last category but wondered how they work out the £7,400. Is it the last tax year ( in which case I wouldn't qualify) or is it the current income, say the last few months in which case I would.

Presumably the income that qualifies you for UC since the income value comes under that section.

Oops. So current income I think!
