Pension contributions

BarbaraofSeville · 28/09/2020 11:09

Go through your bank statements and credit card bills if applicable to see what bills you pay. Most accounts allow you to download a year's worth of transactions so you can sort and categorise them.

Norightorwronganswer · 28/09/2020 11:11

OP would highly recommend splitting annual expenses into 12 and saving for those if you can. I found it so daunting and told myself we couldn’t afford to do it but we can and it makes life so much easier knowing the money is there for things when they occur.

Thesaltandthesea · 28/09/2020 11:12

Fixed direct debits/standing orders:
Mortgage
Council tax
Gas & electric
Car finance
Car tax
Car insurance
Building and contents insurance
Life insurance
Dog insurance
Dog vet plan
Dog walker
Childcare
Broadband
Phone contract
Gym membership
Loan repayment
Cleaner
Kids activities (horse riding, scouts, swimming lessons, dance lessons)

Variable monthly costs:
Fuel
Parking
Car washing/valeting
Food - Gousto, weekly groceries, meals out, takeaways
Cleaning supplies
Dog food
School lunches/packed lunches
School trips (pre COVID)
Clothing and shoes as and when
Savings into holiday fund
Savings into essential repairs
Birthday presents as and when (Christmas usually paid for by annual bonus)
Haircuts
Beauty treatments
Family days out

I think that's everything!

Some online banks offer a system that tracks your types of spending into a pie chart or similar

fuckyoucoronaihavelostmyjob · 28/09/2020 11:41

Thank you all this has been so helpful
