Hello

I've been offered a place to do a post grad, I'll have to leave my job. I'm a single mum to 2, aged 8 and 10. I currently receive UC to cover housing and get the usual benefits. If I'm a student, will I be able to claim? I'm finding it hard to get a benefits calculator that works for mature, single parent students? Any experiences or advice greatly received TIA

There's a really good group on Facebook called universal credit essentials. You can search on there.

You do know you will be eligible for student finance too? I am just about to start a Post Grad Degree, I am getting 11.5k from student finance England, the fees are 6.5k, so the rest goes towards living costs. UC will take that into consideration, but you will still get UC. Have you tried 'Gingerbreads' website? It's aimed at single parents and has a culculator on it. Good luck!

Think there is a specific set of rules regarding deductions for post grad students. It will depend on the amount of student loans available to you. The best people to advise would be your student union welfare department.
