Picking a private pension

DH works for himself after years of being employed. We need to sort out a pension for him, but have no idea where to start. If you are in a similar position, how did you sort out a pension please?

Sorry, no advice but following - hopefully someone knowledgeable will be along soon

Sorry not a direct answer to your query but may be relevant.
What pension arrangements did he have with ex-employers(s)?
Is there anything useful there?

He was part of his previous employer's scheme. He actually has a few different pensions from various companies as he hasn't stayed with one employer for long.

@Justajot

He was part of his previous employer's scheme. He actually has a few different pensions from various companies as he hasn't stayed with one employer for long.
Sounds wise for him to see an independent financial advisor as it may make sense to amalgamate some of his previous pension pots, but some may be best left alone if the benefits would be greater. Not the kind of thing an amateur can do properly.

How do we choose an independent financial advisor?

You may not need to shell out a few grand on a financial adviser. There is plenty of information and guidance around to start with first. A good place to start would be the Money and Pension Service which offers plenty of straightforward advice. He should also make an effort to track down and ascertain exactly how much he has in each pot.

Also a good idea to think about how much income you want to aim for in retirement and then try to work backwards - you may need to see an adviser about this. MaPS used to do a retirement financial adviser directory which may be useful. Most financial advisers will offer a free consultation and discussion first. Look for transparency of fees up front.

Thanks - I will take a look at those suggestions.
