I'm having to battle my ex husband once again in court. Long story short, he is moving back to the UK after 20 years and has no clue as to how much things costs. He states that for himself, wife, toddler and newborn that he will need in excess of £1000 a month for food.

I spend about £400 a month for myself and two grown up kids.

I need info for court on average food spending please if anyone is happy to help.

Huge thanks !

Does he eat lobster and caviar every meal ?

Try the Office for National Statistics website

Reese123 · 06/08/2020 11:02

Yep I spend about £400 too for 3 adults and one toddler if that helps

Good luck

Why is it your issue how much he spends on food? I’m confused

HeyHeyWhatever · 06/08/2020 11:26

What are the proceedings? Application to vary a maintenance order?

Well I would imagine that he is trying to tell the court that he needs to budget for at least £1000/month to feed his current family.

4 adults here - 3 of them strapping six footers with big appetites. I reckon we spend about £5-600 pm on food. I am conscious of spending though, if I were to buy higher end, like shopping in M&S, and included lots of alcohol for example, I can see how it could be much more than that.

@doyounothavegoogle I still don’t see why it’s the OPs business why he tells the court that. She said it was her ex and her children are adults, any financial responsibility he had towards her rightly should ended when her children reached adulthood.

Well her opening sentence states that she is having to battle him in court so presumably she would like to refute his statement about the cost of groceries...but yes, I had overlooked the fact that the children are grown up!

Don't know why it's confusing. OP doesn't have to give every detail about her legal issues.

The court will have zero interest in a MN thread.

Do you always use cards to pay for shopping? If so, you could download your bank statements for 12 months and show your average weekly spend in Tesco. (or wherever) Obviously not going to help if you buy high value electronics there regularly too.

Otherwise, work out and cost a weekly meal plan for their family size.

Nobody said that they would?

I don't think £1000 is way out. He's a young family to support now so any spoussin maintenance will naturally go down, especially now his first family are growell up.

Well the OP seems to think they will if she's planning on using it as 'evidence' It's a weird thread. Why is it up to OP to challenge her ex-husband's expenses?

None of our business.

The OP is asking for advice on where t source some reasonable figures. I very much doubt she is going to print off a Mumsnet thread and show it to the judge.
