Car insurance mistake

Finally got my own car. Naturally started my own insurance policy. Had been a named driver for a year with Direct Line.

Phoned direct line for a quote. Was insane! They told me I had 1 years no claims bonus. Thought, wow awesome, so went onto look at comparison sites etc. Found a policy that suited and started it. They're asking for proof of no claims which I genuinely thought I had. And from googling more I can see I actually don't! I'm terrified.

The policy I was under with direct line have mailed me a letter to say I was on a policy for a year with no claims to that policy. I have mailed those letters on to the new insurance company in hope they accept them. If they don't I have no problem paying extra for the missing year (this was quoted £100 more than my current payment).

I'm worried they will cancel the insurance because of a mistake. I genuinely didn't know about no claims as DirectLine said I had 1 year as a named driver.

Any advice or words of wisdom please? I'm going to phone my current insurance tomorrow and explain my stupidity to them and hope they don't cancel my insurance. TIA

They wont cancel it. Worst case scenario, you will have to pay the extra. Dont worry 🙂

I'm pretty sure direct line do give no claims for named drivers.
It's not something all insurance companies do though.

Thanks very much. This is all very new to me. I believed directline gave me one years no claims but the letter they sent to my mother (the policy holder) didn't black and white say one year no claims. It stated the policy number, time I had been on the policy and her no claims with in that policy.

I think they would have credited you the no claims as a gesture, if you took out a policy with them. Just explain to your new company before they contact you, and they will probably just charge you the difference.

Sorted. Paid the extra. Thank you all for the reassurance.
