Can someone explain universal credit when your circumstances change each month

I'm currently on maternity leave coming up to the last 3 months so won't get paid anything. DH job involves earning commission. I've checked on one of the universal credit calculators and it seems we would be entitled to something. But how does it work if DH income changes each month? Also we don't always find out his commission until a few days before he is paid so if I update his earnings each month how much notice am I suppose to give?

Hi, hope this helps.
When you apply you’ve given a date for your assessment period to start and finish (eg23rd of this month to 22nd of next month) and either they get your income for those dates direct from your employers/HMRC or once your assessment period is up you get a reminder to go online and input it yourself. Your UC payday is around 5/6 days after your assessment period ends. Once you’ve inputted/they’ve received your income data you can check how they worked out your award and contact them if you see any mistakes.
We’ve not earned over the limit so I don’t know what would happen if your DH had an extra good payday which meant you were no longer entitled for that month, I’m guessing your award for that month would be ‘zero’ but not sure whether you would have to start a new claim or not.

My income changes every month, i find UC great, just put in my income each month and it calculates what i’ll get paid. If you were entitled to nothing one month I don’t believe you would have to start a new claim

I presume the commission is paid with his wages and reported through HMRC.? If so then would receive notification of any earnings each month so would adjust accordingly.
