Universal credit / council tax - renting / homeowner overlap

Hi i hope someone has been in this position...

I am in the process of buying my first house thanks to a gifted deposit from family.

I will be giving 4 weeks notice on my council house when we exchange so there will be 2/3 weeks overlap of me having both houses.

When do I inform UC of the move in/out dates with an overlap or do I need to declare both houses somehow??

Also. Same with council tax when do I say I’ve moved? Or do I pay for both for a month.

And other things, utilities / WiFi etc I want to transfer these over but will there be an overlap?

Thanks...

I would say you should tell them on the day you move. UC as I'm sure you know doesn't pay any help towards a mortgage.
If you have a work allowance on your claim, it will change from the first assessment period after you report the change I think.

Thanks for your reply I am aware that I will receive no ‘housing benefit’ my query was how to explain I have two houses or does it just go from the date I physically move from house A to house B irrespective of rented/owned.

Thanks x

For council tax you’ll need to pay it on both properties for those few weeks. Call the council and tell them when you’re moving out of your current place and into your new one and they’ll send you a final statement and update any direct debit accordingly relating to your former address and issue you a bill for the new address.

UC is a bit different and I’d just contact them on the day you move into your new address to update your claim. If you receive any housing element you may have to pay something back if they’ve calculated and paid you benefit based on a full four-week period and you’ve moved out mid-way.

Utilities, you’ll pay at your current property until the date your tenancy officially ends (they’ll probably ask for a confirmation letter from the council) And at your new property from the date the sale completes.

Id try and give notice asap so there is as little overlap as possible - you could ask your council if you give notice can it be extended by a week or so.....the notice period that is

I would agree with you - don't give notice on your Council place until you have received confirmation of exchange. On that day, give notice and also start setting up the WiFi as that can take 2-3 weeks to be live. All other bills - let them know a week before except gas and electric - take meter readings in both places on the day you move. There may be some overlap with bills so make sure you have some ££ leeway.

Can't help with UC.
