Help with DM’s benefits please

My DM lives in a council house, my DSis is moving back in to help as my DM is struggling a bit with housework and stuff.

My DM gets a widows pension and claims housing and council tax benefits. My DSis is currently on UC.

The council have said it’s fine for my DSis to move back in.

My mum is going to ring the benefits people today.

Does anyone know how it works? My mum won’t be able to get the single person discount so will that mean my DSis will have to claim housing and council tax benefit through her UC?

Council tax is dealt with by the local authority so your Mum needs to contact them and tell them Sis is moving in. She will then lose her single person discount and possibly get a reduction in HB too as there is now another adult in the house. Sis needs to tell UC she has had a change of circumstances.

How old is your mum and does she receive any disability benefits e.g. DLA or Attendance Allowance? How old is your sister and does she work as well as getting UC?

Your sister cannot claim help with rent if living with your mum unless it was a shared tenancy and they were both responsible for half the rent. Your mum will get a non dependent deduction on her housing benefit and your sister would be expected to contribute.

your mum needs to contact the council within one month of your sister moving back in. Then the council will want to know what your sisters employment situation is and her income. Your mum will still continue to get HB and LCTR but at a different rates

Your mum will also need to separately tell council tax that she is now living in the property with another adult over the age of 18 and this will mean the 25% single person occupancy will not apply - but local council tax benefit will still apply as the former is not means tested but the later is

Your sister will need to tell U.C know as soon as she moves and where she has moved to.

if your mum is struggling to look after herself then would it be useful to try and apply for attendance allowance ?this is paid at two rates weekly but is not means tested so if she was able to claim her HB and LCTR wouldn't be affected
