Where can I learn about investing and managing my money?

Hi MN- I'm clueless about how to manage my money, save for retirement, grow what I have etc etc and I'm trying to educate myself. Can anyone point me to any websites/blogs/Facebook groups that would help ? It all feels very overwhelming - would be so nice to have some recommendations. Preferably free resources.

TIA for any help

www.momeysavingexpert.com is the one most people have heard of.

If you want something structured The Open University has some free courses such as this one

If you are in UK
www.gov.uk
To check your National Insurance contributions per year
To check your state pension & benefits

Sort yourself a good pension. That was the best financial advice I ever got from my Dad when I started my first job. He persuaded me to pay a bit extra every month, before I had a partner or children. I did it and am do glad I followed his advice.

Recently I've been listening to Suze Orman. She is an American financier and a huge advocate of women becoming empowered over their personal finances. She has a podcast called the Women and Money podcast which is great listening.

I would recommend firstly having a listen to the live show she did a couple of years ago called Suze Orman live at the Apollo. She did a live talk to a big group of women about how they need to start thinking about their money and how to become empowered over it. It's available on Spotify or YouTube.

Although a lot of what she talks about is specific to Americans, the general principles of how to think about and manage money are universal and I have learned so much from listening to her podcast.

The key principles are paying off debts such as credit cards and loans, then establishing an 8 month emergency fund. Paying into a pension is critical. Once those things are in place you are in a position to start investing.

I've recently joined Rebecca Robertson's money mastery collective - it's searchable on Facebook. It's genuinely made a difference to me.

Here’s a nice flow chart that helps you work out what your priorities should be at different stages of life.

Agree with Meaningful Money podcast, that has taught me so much. Also Money to the Masses podcast and website. Reddit has a useful sub called UK Personal Finance which is full of good info.

These are so useful, thank you all! Apologies for the delayed response.

If anyone has any suggestions for those investing later rather than earlier in life those would be welcome too.

Great resources, thank you

sst1234 · 11/07/2020 15:22

All the one offs are good resources but generally keeping up with money news is the best way to understand what works. So browsing money section of online newspapers, listening to today program’s business and market section etc.
Ultimately investing is just speculation and speculation is deductive science (and a bucket load of luck). Understanding long term market trends, linking leading financial and political indicators to build a picture, is what you need to be successful. Good luck.

I would avoid the guardian if you want to actually make money. They have a left wing agenda which is usually about spending other people’s money rather than making your own.
