Universal credit rent help

Is it possible to get help with rent through universal credit if you have moved out of a house where you are on the mortgage with your ex partner?
I want to move out of the mortgaged property that I currently live in with my husband. I will be entitled to universal credit as I am on a low income and have children but I will really struggle with the cost of rent unless I can help to cover this. Will being on a mortgage prevent me getting help with rent?
I want to sell the current house and take my share towards buying a smaller property but until it sells And the court awards a split of assets I will need to rent somewhere.

Yes you can as long as reasonable measures are being taken to sell the house or for your ex to buy you out. If there is significant equity in the house and you will get half of that in the future and it amounts to more than 16k then you cannot claim Uc then unless that equity is going straight into another property.

Sorry just seen that the equity will be going into another property so yes I think you can claim help with rent in the meantime, you may just need to provide evidence that the house is on the market if asked.

Thanks babyroobs. Yes, the equity will be all needed to purchase another property. My capacity to work is limited so I need every penny towards buying a new home although it will be have to be much smaller and in a cheaper area. I will be trying to put the house on the market straightaway but I am not sure if that will be possible because I will need the courts to make a ruling on how the equity will be divided between me and my husband. I know that what my husband thinks is fair will not be viewed as fair by the courts. If I want a fair share then I will have to wait for a court ruling. I’m going to really struggle to pay rent in the meantime if I can’t get help with it through universal credit.

If you are unable to rent, how will you secure a mortgage if needed?

Presumably plenty of equity in the house ?
Totallycluelessoverhere · 06/07/2020 10:27

ivykaty there will be enough in my share of the equity to but a small but suitable property outright. I won’t need a mortgage once I can sell the house and take my share.
