How do I get HMRC to sort this out - PAYE problems

I'm on PAYE. I'm pretty sure looking at my payslips my employer has had me paying the right amount of tax.

However, HMRC have spent months sending me various differnent tax codes all of them with explanations that I've underpaid tax.

I looked on the Government Gateway and discovered that while all my income and PAYE figures were correct for each month for the last financial year, the total was over £1000 out.

So I sent them a message telling them they'd made a mistake and all the figures reflected what I'd paid / received except for the barmy total. The figures were right. The total was wrong.

Now, they've decided they owe me over £1400 and are apparently processing a refund.

How do I get it into their skulls - I owe them nothing. They owe me nothing -we're quits. I mean I'd love £1400 but they don't owe it to me. Taking it would be fraud. I feel like they owe me £1400 just for the effort its taking to deal with them

The good news is that they've finally got my tax code right for this financial year

Are you sure they're not just refunding you the overpaid PAYE?

Don't worry. They'll probably decide that, after they've sent you the cheque, that you've underpaid by £1347 and they will collect this amount by PAYE for the rest of the year, because this is how they seem to deal with it and has happened to me at least twice.

Are you talking 19-20 income?? Bit hard to be so far out in June and they wouldnt (usually - atm things not usual at Hmrc!) send a refund in month 3 or 4.

Can you give us total pay and total tax paid from your March payslip or P60 OP?

The flurry of codes will most likely be them coding in an overpayment, and would be changed again if they subsequently issue a refund iykwim Smile

Wouldnt usually send a refund for the current year I mean.

Sorry in advance for long reply.

Yes this was 2019-20. I don't know what they're playing at.

On government gateway all the income tax and NI payments as well as gross income correlate exactly to what is on my payslip. They were sending so many tax codes ( one week I got 3!!) that eventually they advised my employer to leave me on standard code and sort it at the end of the year. One of the tax codes would apparently have seen me taking home minus income!! So I paid everything in the end at 1250L ( or whatever the equivalent was last year).

So everything correlated. I paid on standard tax code which they finally settled on as correct but they added all the payments up completely wrong.

I've sent them another note:

"Thank you for issuing me with a refund. However, I think you've made a mistake. All the monthly figures shown for gross income, tax and NI are correct and correlate with my payslips. However the total at the bottom of each column is wrong. While I would obviously be delighted to take a cheque for £1400 I can not in all conscience do so. Please will you advise how you wish to proceed"

If they tell me they're right I will stick it in premium bonds until they finally realise they are wrong!!

So what was your taxable pay total, and total tax paid (before refund) and then how much was the refund?
Send figs by PM if youd prefer not to put here and I'll tell you what's what if I can Smile

You'll get these from either P60 or March payslip.
