Hi, my Dh had a bump from a lorry on M6. Thankfully DH is fine if a little shaken but my car (he used it to drive to new job this morning!) has a dented wheel arch and severe cosmetic damage. The lorry driver pulled over but was foreign and DH couldnt really understand what was going on. A police officer also pulled over and managed to get the insurance company and lorry drivers name and we also have the reg of the lorry.
We believe driver was from belguim but nationality really is a mystery! Have rang the insurance company who have not been helpful at all and say they cannot trace driver without more details! We dont have any other inforamtion!!!!!

Has anyone dealt with this before?
How do i get to find out more info? We have the name that was written on the lorry but have no idea if he works for this company or if it was advertising logo IYKWIM.

Well firstly, i am glad your DH is ok.

To be honest i really dont know what you can do....have you contacted the police to see if there is any way they can obtain info?

what have your insurance company said?

I think if the worst comes to the worst, you will have to claim off your own insurance... not ideal, but the main thing is your hubby is ok.

Let us know what the outcome is, and good luck

Hi, with the info you have tracing his insurance should be ok. If you have his insurance details and his reg, your insurers can pursue them for a recovery of his outlay. Even without a policy number they should be able to trace the reg as they have to upload this data to MIDB.

Speak to your insurers and ask them to start the searches.

I work for a large firm and have claimed back from foreign drivers policies, it just takes a bit longer.

My mum had similar happen to her on m25,a Dutch lorry driver moved over into her lane as she overtook and was in his blind spot. tbh she had to settle for only getting half her excess back as the driver went back on what he'd said at the time (that it was his fault) so the claim was disputed and that took a year I'm sure she only had similar info though and tracing him wasn't the issue.

i dont think my insurance will help as im only 3rd party. Im not sure though!
have taken pics and emailed the insurance company in uk and asked them to investigate as a matter of urgency so hopefully i will hear something in a few years!!!lmao

Your right, if you only have 3rd party cover your insurers wont get involved.

I'll be happy to help you with the claim if you get stuck.

The police and customs will be able to trace his employer through reg plate if your insurers won't get involved and they have to carry fully comprehensive insurance- deal with his company direct. It will take longer but keep copies of everything you do, receipts for car etc.

I can speak French if it helps (but not Flemish) and you need to write letters to anyone, but I don't doubt someone else will be probably more proficient as I am only semi fluent nowadays.

thanks for the offers of help. I will wait and see if i get a reply from the insurance company. have asked them to confirm ASAP that he is insured with them.

happy: you dont work for AXA by any chance????

HappyMummyOfOne · 25/09/2007 20:56

No, not Axa

If thats who he is with you should be OK, they are usually good at sorting claims.

bonkerz · 25/09/2007 21:12

fingers crossed! Think the thing that worries me is when i rang AXA UK they asked the nationality of driver. DH didnt know and said either french or belgium. A quick google of the company name (we think) reveled belgium. The guy on helpline said if its belguim then should be ok BUT if its France it will be more complicated as they are represented by someone else and that got me confused!

We were hit by a Polish lorry driver. Insurance company and police no use at all. We paid for the damage ourselves.
