Child Benefit Tax Charge

This seems like an obvious question, but I can’t find the answer online. Does anyone else know? My (D)H is about to move out. He earnings sometimes bring him over the £50k threshold. As he will be the NRP and the claim for CHB is in my name will there be a tax penalty for him?

Hi, yes there will be if he is the higher earner. You can calculate the tax charge using this calculator
www.gov.uk/child-benefit-tax-calculator

Thanks Reece, I have seen that calculator, but it says use “partners” income if higher. But I will not have a “partner” when we split?

No as you will be claiming it, not him. If he moves out and you are not together as a couple you can claim.

TerrapinStation · 25/06/2020 23:22

I don't think it will affect him but that's not your concern is it? Report to HMRC that you are separated, filk in your tax return honestly and let them sort it out with him.

If you don't have a partner answer no to that question

Thanks Mother and Terrapin, yes it is technically not my worry, but I just wanted to understand his financial position as I want to be fair to him and ensure he can afford to contribute to the kids and cover his living expenses rent here is expensive, so his rent on a 1 bed flat, will be twice our current mortgage on a 4 bed house.
