Can I claim UC alongside £151.20 per week SMP?

Hi,
Sorry if I have posted in the wrong place.
Will be going on Mat Leave as of January (all being well, fingers crossed).
DH is in a fairly low paid job (nets approx. £1100 per month) and 6 weeks after going on Mat Leave, after the 90%, I will be getting the £151.20 per week SMP.
Our rent/bills is just under DH’s monthly salary. We are saving money so will get by but may be a little tight at times.
Does anyone know if we will be entitled to any sort of UC?
TIA :)

Best thing to do is a benefits calculator.
Entitled 2 is pretty accurate.

SMP is classed as earning under UC so along with your DHs wages it will be deducted from your award at 63% taper. Also if you are claiming fir housing costs it does make a difference.

There are a few variables that's why its best to use a calculator.

It will depend on a number of things - do you pay rent and whether its council or private, do you have other children, how old are you and your partner. If you provide these details I will do you a rough calculation. Also is the smp paid weekly or monthly?

Babyroobs · 18/06/2020 16:48

Sorry just seem you do pay rent - if private would need to know the local housing allowance for the number of bedrooms you are entitled to claim for.

Remember you can claim child benefit

Entitled 2 is good for a general idea.

It's really hard to give a straight yes/ no answer to a lot of "could I also get UC?" questions because as pp have said there are lots of variables. Nothing to stop you running the figures through a calculator :)

Thanks all for your help :)
@Babyroobs - this will be our first child, privately renting, I am 27 and DH is 29. SMP will come from my employer on a monthly basis.

@Babyroobs sorry I don’t know how to get the local housing allowance, did try to have a google but couldn’t see anything. Local council is Horsham District though if that helps :)

You should get some Uc, it will depend on your rent and the local housing allowance for a two bedroom property in your area.

Would you get UC if combined income £1700?
