Earned some cash last tax year, how do I start self-assesment process?

Alongside a pension, on which I already pay a little tax, I did some work last year and got paid (less than £2k). I want to do the right thing, but the HMRC online system is not being very helpful! Do I have to register as a business, even though I don't have a company or anything like that, just a record of payments received?

If you have never done a self assessment you need to register first and then they will send you your log in details.

If already registered, you just go through the steps answering the questions, putting in earnings and expenses when prompted.

www.gov.uk/log-in-file-self-assessment-tax-return

You need a login and a UTR which they will send you in the post

Look on www.gov.uk and in the search bar, enter self assessment tax

You were self employed so not a business as such but it is a fairly straightforward process to complete a tax return for small incomes without expenses.

Thank you. Will look in to it later tomorrow.
