Northern Rock - what would you do??

My DH has said that for my 40th he will give me £1000, I am tempted to buy shares in Northern Rock in the hope that share price will rise and I will be able to make a bit of money .

Anyone think it is a good idea and if not what would you do with the money?

Yes, my dad bought some and dh was told by work accountants to buy as many as possible too.

NannyL · 23/09/2007 10:17

ofcourse its a gamble, but imo its a gamble worth taking!

Boogalooblue · 23/09/2007 10:18

telegraph article Hedge funds plot Northern Rock raid
"Three of the world's most powerful hedge funds are plotting a break-up of Northern Rock that could generate profits of hundreds of millions of pounds from the stricken mortgage bank ? but leave shareholders with virtually nothing."

Not sure that I'd gamble a grand on it...

LIZS · 23/09/2007 10:35

agree with the Blonde. If they are taken over you may not get much back in addition.

Boogalooblue · 23/09/2007 14:20

Argghh I am really not good at this gambling lark , I want to earn some money and this seemed like a good idea but would be gutted if I lost it instead, will just enjoy the grand instead, and no doubt watch the share price soar

I wouldn't personally

WideWebWitch · 23/09/2007 14:22

I think it's a v good idea. NRock are not insolvent. If I had cash lying aobut I'd do it. They're v likely to be taken over by another large bank and the price will go up imo.

WideWebWitch · 23/09/2007 14:23

It's always a risk. If you want a no risk at all option do something else with the money.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 23/09/2007 14:24

If I had the money I might buy some. In fact I didn't realise they were that low...... I might scrape together a few quid.

Opinions on bulletin boards are quite polarised at the moment about whether it would be a good idea to buy NRK shares right now, people have said, "I think the other banks will wait as long as possible to ensure NRK is dead, before applying a "Mercy killing". Who knows what the SP will be by then, some reckon as low as 6p", as well as, "The NRK loan book is only valued at 1.80 p/share anyway so any potential buyer is not going to pay much of a premium on that figure. Ordinary investors should steer well clear of NRK. Amazing how greed can blind people to the realities of a situation!", this by a seasoned share buyer.

Other opinions have been more favourable, but definitely risky. Do your own research before you spend your money!

Boogalooblue · 23/09/2007 16:02

Thanks very much again, am so cautious that i won't I cant really afford to lose money, have just bought two beds for just over £1k!!

Yep seasoned share buyer is right, it is greed, but dont we all want a bit more than we have got?
