So you have any pension savings or assets?

AudTheDeepMinded · 04/06/2020 13:14

Dunno if you want a pat on the back or a talking to? The answer depends on so many variables that it is a nonsensical question really. How do you think you are doing? is money a particular motivation of yours?

imsooverthisdrama · 04/06/2020 13:17

Probably better than most or worst than some .
You've no debt so that's good that it's clear now you can build up savings.
Some people don't have any savings.
I'll be honest I like to have 2-3 months salary saved just in case but I tend to save for things like holiday / home improvements .
I can't sit with thousands in the bank when I need say a new bathroom etc.

transformandriseup · 04/06/2020 13:19

If that's on top of owning your own home (mortgaged) it's more than a lot of people have. Some people on here will have 50k plus in savings but several people I know just have a couple of months wages.

LovingLola · 04/06/2020 13:20

How much is the credit card debt?

curtainsforme · 04/06/2020 13:21

how am I doing for a 30 year old

It's situation dependent isn't it?

My 19yo has £3500 savings, their own car and a job. He still lives at home.

I have £3000. No mortgage but running a home so regular outgoings.

Whats your situation?

cessi · 04/06/2020 13:21

No I don't want a pat on the back !!
I have a car fully paid off I don't have my own house yet still renting but buying soon I have 50% of the mortgage sorted I just wonder as I have some friends that I know are better off And some that aren't

Sorry meant to say that amount is great for my 19to but bloody awful for me in my 40's

cessi · 04/06/2020 13:22

The credit card debt is £1300

I'm thirty, own two houses - one four bed with garage and one three bed - with £10k in the bank, own car, Civil Service pension, an Audi and three children. I've just spent over £10k on home improvements 🤷🏽‍♀️

My point isn't to boast - but we're all different so we need more information

Zenithbear · 04/06/2020 13:26

I think you're doing ok. Is it time think about your financial plans regarding pensions, more savings, investments, property etc? And what do you want to keep aside for fun, holidays and the like.
I only started being serious about money at your age and have all of of the above now and I only need to work part-time and looking at early retirement mid 50's.
I had similar at your

KaptenKrusty · 04/06/2020 13:27

Ahh it’s fine - I’m 31, married and we still rent - I only have 10k saved And that’s only because my parents gave it to me as a wedding gift (and it’s in the house deposit fund) I am debt free though ! Am saving like crazy or though - 500 a month I’m managing so it is building!

Are you able to save at the moment?

allfalldown47 · 04/06/2020 13:28

I'm 48 and have no savings in my savings account but I do have a good pension.
Does that help?

cessi · 04/06/2020 13:31

Well yes I have had so much fun in my twenties going on good holidays working abroad for few summers and have travelled but that time I was living with what I had. during the lockdown I have managed to save a bit of money and it's made me relised before I used to waste money on silly things so it's made me want to save more now

age

ArriettyJones · 04/06/2020 13:34

There will be 30 year olds who have recently qualified in something like medicine, 30 year old post docs, 30 year old parents, 30 year old volunteers and so on.

I don’t think you can generalise by age.

FinallyHere · 04/06/2020 13:34

Some times, the old sayings are the best ones. Comparison is the thief of joy.

Ginkypig · 04/06/2020 13:35

You shouldn't have any savings if you have credit card debt (unless ts 0% interest) as it defeats the purpose!

Savings at any age very much depends on the circumstances of the persons life imo. Outgoings, living independently, job, mortgage etc.

concernedforthefuture · 04/06/2020 13:36

Why aren't you using your savings to pay of the credit card debt? It makes no sense to be paying interest every month (unless you've got 0% rate).

It really depends on your circumstances. Can’t compare with others. I am of Indian origin - I lived at home until I married and basically paid for everything (bills food mortgage) for my parents until I was 28 and moved in with my then fiancee. He had a tiny place which he could comfortably afford the mortgage and bills for and so my focus was on saving and repaying my debt (I had 30k investments and about 10k debt). We bought the house when I was 31 and by then I had approx 40k in investments and

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/06/2020 13:43

If you have kids / smaller salary / bigger outgoings 3k might be more than reasonable

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/06/2020 13:45

Why aren't you using your savings to pay of the credit card debt? It makes no sense to be paying interest every month (unless you've got 0% rate).

I had 10k debt and basically restructured it via 0% credit cards and overpaid 100£ per month. I still invested because any return would be higher than that and a good thing I did as some of my investments during the financial crisis have doubled in value.

AteAllTheAfterEights · 04/06/2020 13:45

What do you mean by you have 50% of the mortgage sorted? If you only have 3k surely you don’t have deposit?

Zomblie · 04/06/2020 13:47

I have £9k savings at 36.

My sister has £95k savings at 20.

We both got the same amount of an inheritance, I spent the majority of mine on a house deposit, paying off debt and a nice car, she stuck hers in the bank til she is older.

It's all relative to your situation. £3k is good for some and bad for others.
