Debit Card Fraud

Well, I was checking up on my accounts online, which I do religiously every week, and I noticed a debit card payment, with my card, that I did not recognise. I phone my bank and was told that it correponded to a withdrawal over the counter using my debit card. Thing is, I haven't lost my card at all, still have it in my purse...

Anyway, that card has been cancelled and an investigation started and I just wondered if anyone knew how likely it is that we'll get my money back (we don't have any insurance on our cards). Also how can they have withdrawn over the counter using 'my' card when I haven't lost it? Isn't that the bank's fault for not asking for ID and just giving the money to the wrong person?

bumping for you

Sounds like your debit card got cloned and there are plenty of fake cards in circulation. What has likely happened is that the details from your debit card were reimprinted on a cloned card and that card used. This can happen where you've recently used the card; I read of a case where a debit card was cloned at a music festival when he used the ATM machine there.

The bank should reimburse you the funds in due course; the bank will write off the money.

Cloning a credit card takes seconds. Whilst a card is being swiped for payment - dishonest staff can swipe the card details which are downloaded on computer.

A duplicate card is made and until your next credit card statement arrives to alert you - the cloner can spend at will.

Restaurants provide card cloners with the best opportunities to commit fraud as it is commonplace for credit cards to be taken away from the table to be swiped. Do not therefore let it out of your sight.

Thanks for this info. Even though it happens all the time, still is rubbish! If it was in a shop I have an inkling which one. Girl on the counter hangs about with some nasty boys from here. Anyway, still haven't heard anything back from my bank so will give them a call.

Thanks xx

what bank are you with? my husbands card got cloned that way a couple of years back and we are with abbey and got all our money back.

Just to let you know that I got the money back but with absolutely no follow up. So nop inofrmation about how and where my card was cloned. Pleased to get the money but it's a shame they couldn't tell me anymore, I would have liked to know so that I can avoid that retailer in the future!
