suffering financially, which benefits to apply for?

hi, i have been working for the past year and a half but have recently been made redundant. i am now suffering financially and dont know how i will be able to deal with things further. i dont think i am eligible for job seekers allowance since i have only been working for a year and a half, and can not apply for universal credit because of my landlord (personal reasons which i cant get into, but its out of the picture)

does anyone have any idea what sort of benefits i might be eligible for in the meantime until i get a new job?

thanks

So many variables. Check out entitledto.co.uk that will give you a fairly good idea

There is no other option but to claim Uc if you haven't paid enough NI contributions to claim new style JSA. I'm afraid that's the only one on offer.

ActuallyItsEugene · 23/05/2020 02:16

It's either new style JSA or UC unfortunately OP.

How would your landlord know you were claiming UC? The money goes straight to you and no one is informed, you'd pay him from your bank.
He'd have no reason to know unless you told him.

make sure you apply for council tax reduction through your local council as soon as possible also as it cant be backdated.

Gingerkittykat · 23/05/2020 02:56

What are your circumstances? Single or in a couple? Do you have children?

Again, like another poster said it's not up to your landlord if you claim UC. At least you will have some money towards your rent rather than nothing.

flirtygirl · 23/05/2020 22:24

Nobody needs to know what benefits you claim. So claim universal credit as soon as possible.

Does your landlords mortgage mean housing benefit can’t be used?

userxx · 24/05/2020 09:19

@Babyroobs Is that how it works? Not enough National insurance so you claim job seekers allowance?

userxx · 24/05/2020 09:19

Sorry, it's the other way around 🙈

unicornsarereal72 · 24/05/2020 10:13

It is only universal credit now. Go to turn2us website. There is a calculator there.

I'm sure your landlord would rather have the rent actually paid than you have zero income?

Babyroobs · 24/05/2020 14:10

userxx . If you haven't paid enough NI contributions to claim new style JSA ( contributions based) then you may be able to claim Universal credit which is a means tested benefit. However as it is means tested it will look at whether you have savings, a partner who is earning, rent to pay, children to support etc in deciding whether you have any entitlement. Universal credit has replaced income related JSA, along with 5 other benefits. It is no longer possible generally to claim income related unless you fall into a certain category of disabled person.

@Babyroobs 👍👍. Thank you, that makes sense.
