Hi everyone,
I hope you are all safe and well..
I am a Married Mum of two and I have been self employed for 3 years now. Because my business wasn't bringing in a lot of money I have been working part time aswell. I've just come off Maternity leave to find the company I worked for has sold the business off to a new company but they have stopped nights - which means my position is no longer there :( I am currently trying to sort this out with him - but I cant seem to get any help from him at all.
Unfortunately my business is not doing anything either as no one wants to buy a car in the current situation.
I was hoping to claim the 80% Self employment furlough scheme only to find that my part time income outweighed my self employment over the last two years so I cannot claim that either..

To top all of this off, I was in the position of buying a house (after 12 years of saving) The price had been agreed and we were at the point of signing, when the seller has asked to postpone it. Which means I am unable to claim Universal credit due to my savings :(

I seem to of fell through every crack of the system, I am now left with no income :(

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Keep safe everyone xxx

Could you get a job in a supermarket or elsewhere? Might be hard with no childcare?
Unfortunately you will likely have to use your savings to live on until you manage to bring in an income. Sorry you are in this position, this virus has wrecked so many plans. Good luck.

SandysMam · 12/05/2020 15:22

Just seen you are married, is your husband not working either?

HollowTalk · 12/05/2020 15:24

That's really tough that you earned more from the job, but they've stopped employing you. It seems very unfair that you shouldn't be able to claim from one or the other. Were you still working for the other company back in February?

sleepismysuperpower1 · 12/05/2020 15:25

I'm sorry, that is really tough. Would you be eligible for jobseekers allowance? (link to eligibility criteria here), and child benefit for your dc? (link to eligibility criteria here).

rose69 · 12/05/2020 15:27

Hi, sorry that you have found yourself in this situation. your local council will have details of organisations who can give advice on legal rights and benefits claims. The indeed jobs website is advertising desk based work such as 111 staff and COVID contact tracing.

PotteringAlong · 12/05/2020 15:27

What is your husband doing?

wontletmeout · 12/05/2020 15:27

You need to take this up with your new employer. Have they made you redundant? Or furloughed you?

sleepismysuperpower1 · 12/05/2020 15:28

Also if you are looking for a job OP, fruit picking might be an option if you live near one of the farms that are hiring? (list of farms that are hiring here). Your dc could go into school as you would be classed as a key worker.

Oldsu · 12/05/2020 15:32

If you are married you have surely you have an income which would be your DH's unless he is not working, any UC benefits have to be claimed jointly and would depend on household income and yes savings .

LangClegsInSpace · 12/05/2020 15:37

This may be an unfair redundancy as it doesn't sound like there was any consultation. You might also be protected by the TUPE regulations and it's worth checking if there has been maternity discrimination.

You should repost in employment issues.

Meanwhile, depending on your NI contributions, you should be able to claim 'new style' JSA.

onemorepringle · 12/05/2020 15:45

Sorry but if your husband is working you probably won’t qualify for benefits - it’s worth checking though.

Jennie2015 · 12/05/2020 16:04

My husband works so luckily we do have his income. I have asked my employer if he will furlough me but he is refusing to furlough any staff. I asked for holiday pay for while I have been on Maternity leave to keep me going but he said he would need to speak to his retailer..and that was over a week ago now :( Originally when i asked to go back he told me there was not any positions available, so i had to write to him after I had some employment advice.. he then said i could go back for a few hours (I used to do 24-36 on nights) I can no longer work days due to my husbands job and childcare. The company I worked for have stopped nights all together now. I cant claim benefits due to savings, even though they are for a house purchase :(
I have been applying for jobs but nothing back yet.. fingers crossed i can find something.
Thank you for all your help and advice :) xxx

You should get more employment advice. This doesn't sound right at all.

Try Maternity Action
maternityaction.org.uk/advice-line/

or ACAS
www.acas.org.uk/contact

You can claim new style JSA regardless of savings and your husband's income. It's not means tested, you just need to have paid enough national insurance over the past 2 tax years.

www.gov.uk/how-to-claim-new-style-jsa

Babyroobs · 12/05/2020 17:29

As above you may be able to claim New style JSA for six months if you were employed as well as self employed, it will depend on level of NI contributions paid over the qualifying years.

Raver84 · 12/05/2020 20:26

If your on maternity don't they have to give you your old job back or if that's no longer available they have to offer you something else? Speak to acas, if your role on night is redundant you may be entitled to redundancy pay, they should have consulted with you if that were the case. . Don't just walk away from this.

Student58 · 12/05/2020 22:34

There are exceptions to the rule about savings if the money is for a house purchase - I think you can get the money ignored for a certain period of time. But you would need specialist advice. Try citizens advice if they are operating in your area.

Oldsu · 12/05/2020 22:47

Student58 I think that's only if you sell a property and are using the money to buy a new one not if you are saving up for one

LaurieFairyCake · 12/05/2020 23:01

Luckily you've got savings to get you through

Unfortunately you'll have to start saving again when you get a new job.

You probably wouldn't get UC because your husband is working anyway Thanks

D1nner3D1nner2 · 13/05/2020 14:11

If the company is not giving you night work, then they should make you redundant or offer you alternative work
If you are in UK, the minimum redundancy pay is on here www.gov.uk

Your company should put all your options into writing

If you work days, you would need to find childcare

If you get to the point of a P45, you apply for job seekers contributions based allowance via universal credit www.gov.uk

You can also apply if you have been made redundant, because your redundancy money is not taken into account for a certain time period

You need evidence in writing from your employer before you can apply

superstressy · 13/05/2020 14:21

Don't take (the bad) advice on here. Please contact CAB and they will help you to make a claim or get someone involved at work.

highlystrung · 13/05/2020 15:21

As pp said look into New Style Job Seeker's Allowance. Eligibility depends on employment status (have to be an employee but prob not exclusively) and having paid Class 1 Nat Ins. Doesn't matter if you have savings. Pays out for 6 months.
