Is this enough to live on a month

justAquickQuestion101 · 11/05/2020 23:19

Is 575 a month, enough for gas, water, electric, possible WiFi eg 20 a month, tv license 13 a month (not paying yearly) and shopping
Not including things like clothes, or take away or luxuries in this
What do you think? It is do able?

justAquickQuestion101 · 11/05/2020 23:20

Not including rent either
Literally just what is listed x

Its doable but very tight. You would have to search for the best deals for gas electric and internet and you would have to get basic shopping but i manage on that every month.

sparklefarts · 11/05/2020 23:21

Feeding how many?

stopandListen · 11/05/2020 23:21

Doable yes, it's roughly what I have have left after paying mortgage and council tax. Also depends on if you have kids (I have 2).

stopandListen · 11/05/2020 23:22

Well how much is your rent?

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/05/2020 23:25

What about insurance, fares and fuel, dental and opticians costs, council tax, ?

Pissflapflip · 11/05/2020 23:29

Feel like a pauper Sad in short yes... very much doable as long as there is less than roughly 6 people in your shopping/utilities budget.

BackforGood · 11/05/2020 23:29

For one person ? Yes

But often when people are working out if they have enough, they won't have included all sorts of expenses that might not be weekly or monthly, but have to be paid at some point
Insurances
Travel - be that petrol or a bus pass or trains or whatever
Dentist
Christmas / Birthday gifts
Getting your hair cut
Replacing things (from clothes to phones to white goods)

(If you have dc, that list geta s lot longer, very quickly)

Do you want to tell us a bit more about the situation ?
Folk on here are really good at budgeting

justAquickQuestion101 · 11/05/2020 23:35

I'm changing that amount to 683 sorry now I've worked it all out properly (not a massive difference)
My rent is 695 a month, phone bills r 116.00 (a joke I know) for 2 and then I pay a DD of 44.00

So after rent and those, I have 683 left to live on for a month if I move into this property as my tenancy is up where I am in the next two months.
I have a partner (can't work due to health) and a 2 year old, we would budget and would cut luxuries. Any advice on how to spend what on what?

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 11/05/2020 23:36

How big is your home so we can estimate your water/gas/electric

Is shopping food? How many people and how old are any kids?

justAquickQuestion101 · 11/05/2020 23:37

Council tax is added into already paid sorry forgot that
So I wouldn't be taking council tax from what I have left over
I don't drive
I don't have glasses

Don't have insurance

OP posts:
justAquickQuestion101 · 11/05/2020 23:38

Just a small apartment 2 bedrooms one living room one kitchen

OP posts:
justAquickQuestion101 · 11/05/2020 23:38

And a bathroom obviously! X

OP posts:
Sunbird24 · 11/05/2020 23:39

Can you do anything about your phone contract or are you tied in? If you have unlimited data included then I’d probably use a phone as a hotspot rather than having an additional bill for landline and broadband

Sunbird24 · 11/05/2020 23:41

Forgot to say OP, if you haven’t already, get yourself on a cashback site such as Quidco. I’ve found that really useful

justAquickQuestion101 · 11/05/2020 23:41

I wouldn't get a home phone
I could change my tariff and make it cheaper
It's with o2 I have a airtime plan of 32 and device plan of 24, device plan can't be changed but I can change the airtime so that is something I will look at!

OP posts:
justAquickQuestion101 · 11/05/2020 23:42

Ohh what's that? I will look into it! Never heard of it

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 11/05/2020 23:50

See what the contract end date is on your phone and set reminders to yourself everywhere to change the contract as soon as it is up. Also try phoning them and explaining you're in financial difficulty due to this bill and see if they can swap you to a lower tariff. You won't be the only one in that position at the moment, but that phone bill is a huge chunk of your budget so I'd try the hardest to reduce it.

Is this just one month e.g. Due to paying two lots of rent, or will that be ongoing?

justAquickQuestion101 · 11/05/2020 23:53

This is what I will have every month to spend, I can change my tarriff in 7 days so I'll put it at the lower one there is

OP posts:
MrsMoastyToasty · 11/05/2020 23:58

Are you on a water meter? If not then see if switching from water rates to a meter would save you money. If you're already on a meter then see if you can get any gadgets to save water (and therefore money) from your water supplier..

justAquickQuestion101 · 11/05/2020 23:59

I assume it is possible then but can anyone recommend an estimate or tell me what they pay for their bills at all?? X

OP posts:
justAquickQuestion101 · 12/05/2020 00:01

Or does anyone know if you can set a limit for electric water and gas a month? So you can't go over a certain amount

OP posts:
justAquickQuestion101 · 12/05/2020 00:02

I'll be starting fresh with everything to try and save money, can I ask for a gas and electric meter to? With a limit?

OP posts:
Louise24902 · 12/05/2020 00:07

Hi, I would say this is plenty, it is less than I have for the bills after rent and Council Tax but then it does depend on your area etc aswell.

You can get fixed tariffs for gas and electric - have a look at compare sights and select fixed tariff and see how much they will be.
Where I am ours is £80 a month but I'm in a 2 bed end of terrace house, massive livingroom/garden and detached garage so I would imagine yours should be cheaper but then it depends where abouts you are. A search should answer that though.

Not sure about water charges as I'm in Scotland and ours is paid in with the council tax.

For WiFi, we pay £48 a month for Sky TV and WiFi. Before I had the TV I was £25 for just the WiFi with Virgin and I just used Netflix when I was wanting to watch something.

Food shopping depends on what you tend to eat but I'm roughly about £200-£250 a month on food for me, DP and DD (4) but my DP works away for half the month. Our food bill probably could be less but I tend to overbuy sometimes!

It's definitely do able and you can price up everything you're looking for by doing quick quotes online then add in how much you usually spend on food a month and you'll be able to work out how much you'll spend 😁

LuminousAmber · 12/05/2020 00:09

I don’t think you can have a limit on meters op - if you hit the ‘limit’ you’d be blocked from gas/electric - the utility boards have rules about not leaving anyone without.

Mine (roughly) are:
Gas: £50 a month
Water: £55 a month
Electric: £60 a month
WiFi: £29 a month (inc home phone)
TV license: £13 a month

So that would leave, what, £470 odd for shopping.
I could feed 5 of us on that if I had to although it would be tight.
