Debt, finally sorting it

newchanges · 07/05/2020 20:06

Posted on here a while ago, I had debt of around 1300, I stopped buying pointless items I spread my money out properly and now I only have payment of 57, 150, 180 and 170 due.
I am really happy with myself getting out of this horrible experience, this will all be done next month and I actually feel so much happier knowing it's all nearly over. I've even paid my over draft off too. Which I would always , always use.
Pointless post but just wanted to share with someone😊
It was actually all thanks to people giving me advice of how they did it so thanks to you whoever you were too :)

I paid off a lot of debt a couple of years ago and it was such a huge relief when I made the final repayment.
Well done on sorting your debt out, it’s a huge achievement!

Campurp · 07/05/2020 20:10

That’s brilliant! I’ve accumulated around £3500 worth of debt and have just started getting serious about paying it all off, this month.
It’ll take some sacrificing, but by January i will be in the black if all goes to plan.
You must feel amazing.

Aquamarine1029 · 07/05/2020 20:13

Very well done, op! You should be very proud. I'm sure you've learned a lot of lessons, the main one being the difference between want and need. Your future and mental health will be so much brighter without all that debt, stress and worry.

newchanges · 07/05/2020 20:17

@Caramel78 thank you! I feel like a weight has been lifted and I can actually sleep!

@Campurp don't worry you can do it! Mine wasn't that much but either way whatever the amount if you are determined then you can! My debt was from pointless stupid items, buy now pay later, clothes etc never again!

@aquamarine1029
Thank you! Yes I've really learnt. Because at the time you think, yeah I can afford this I'll just pay it back next month, I did it for too many things and it all got way to much. I did buy now pay in a month, buy now pay over 6 months, used all my credit limit I just went completely over the top and had no money to ever spend properly as it was always going back onto what debt I had.
I will never ever get myself into debt again. My credit score is ruined. So that is another thing that I need to sort but hopefully by not using my credit cards (snapped them up too!) it will show I've changed and hopefully go back up Confused

My credit score was ruined but 4 years later it’s pretty much perfect. Slow process but so worth it x

Headbangersandmash · 07/05/2020 20:41

Well done OP ⭐️

helpmum2003 · 07/05/2020 20:42

Well done!!!

Elieza · 07/05/2020 20:43

That’s great you’ve done so well. When you look back at some of the pointless crap you spent your hard earned dough on you will probably just shake your head at the stupidity of the old you. Well I do that anyway!

Things that were important then are just nothing to me now. I’ve got the last few payments of my credit card to go and then I’m in the clear from loans and cards for the first time in seven years.

It will be sooo amazing to have an extra £230 a month to use constructively. Well most of it anyway, I may treat myself to the odd small treat on payday, but nothing expensive! Grin

newchanges · 07/05/2020 21:09

Thanks everyone xx
And yeah I agree! Treat yourself all you want but with your own money! That's where I went wrong! I kept using my credit card and took others out when I'd used it all up. Really terrible with money for the last two years. So glad I've fixed it all

OP posts:
Aquamarine1029 · 07/05/2020 22:20

Again, very well done. Don't worry about your credit score, it is soon on it's way up and will continue to get better. You've done brilliantly.

NoraEphronsneck · 07/05/2020 22:25

Well done it's a great achievement.

I'm nearly there too having racked up about £7k on a part-time salary. I should be debt-free by July - which should offset my furloughed salary 😀

Screenburn · 08/05/2020 09:51

Well done OP - amazing achievement. You must feel so free! That’ll be me one day...

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/05/2020 09:58

Now that you have paid your debts off are you going to set aside the amounts that you were using to service your debts towards building some savings?

newchanges · 08/05/2020 11:07

@MrsMoastyToasty
Yeah I will be doing some savings! The whole attitude of " i need this I need that" has completely left me. I can now save and not worry about it thinking, can I really save this? Or I'd say, I have £50 saved let's spend it on crap I don't need :)) not anymore!

@nora
Well done!! Wow 7k! I probably would of done that myself if given the opportunity! Luckily my credit balance never went up😅

newchanges · 08/05/2020 11:08

@Screenburn it will be you one day. You can do it! Although my debt doesn't seem like it was a lot , it really was for me , with what I get a month.
You can get out of debt !

OP posts:
ChocAuVin · 08/05/2020 11:23

Really proud of you OP! It can be done! I was bullied throughout my marriage into taking on a lot of debt (all in my sole name as despite being told I was useless and a drain I was the one with a steady job and creditworthiness Hmm).

Now I’m free and it’s the best feeling ever to be in full control and know that with perseverance and the right mindset, it’s all fixable.

Slow and steady, eyes on the prize is the way. It can take a long time to drift into debt and people shouldn’t expect you can instantly climb out.

I always knew I was better with money than I was allowed to be, despite being berated for it constantly. Funnily enough now I’m divorced my finances are pretty great, thank you very much! Smile

Really well done Smile

newchanges · 08/05/2020 23:32

@ChocAuVin I'm so happy to hear your free of it! And yeah it isn't easy! And I feel for people who are in debt because it's a horrible depressing worry that is always on your mind

I'm sorry you were treated so badly by someone! I am glad you got rid and sorted it all out! Good on you too!

This is great!

We have £3340 on a 0% credit card that’s just built up over the past 6-7 years and been balance transferred then paid off a wee bit then added to but we’ve absolutely decided enough is enough now.

For the past couple of months I’ve managed to make an extra payment of a few hundred towards it over and above the DD I already have set up.

In June we should have a decent chunk of cash (£1000 or so) that we could put towards it but we have our wedding coming up so might do half towards wedding stuff and half towards credit card. We still have a full year on 0% but hopefully we will get it paid in a few months.

I think once you’re in the right mindset that’s it.

ListeningQuietly · 09/05/2020 13:07

Congratulations of paying down so much debt.
Its nice to hear from people who have done and feel better

and to those just starting out - look up the Standing Order Trick
it works
it makes clearing debt relatively painless

newchanges · 09/05/2020 15:16

@lovinglavidaloca it's great that you won't have any interest! That really helps!
And thank you @ListeningQuietly !

Same here. I had 5k on one cc. And 1200 on another. Plus about 800 on dhs.
His he had set a figure to repay and got then to stop usage of it.

The debt was built up of mainly dh spending but it was to purchase things he needed to return to what he wanted to do.. Then more income =pay it off.

Well that didn't happen and we got sill as it was originally around 3500 total

We had a 5k gift and we kept 500 to buy some but we needed and paid the 2 small ones and a chunk of large one.

It left 1600 approx give or take with that months regular payments.
W eplanned 200 pm to clear by Xmas however due to furlough its now 100 however if we don't spend everything each week I pay a bit extra off.. Even if its a fiver..
I'm obsessed with wanting it paid.
I had a 3.56 refund recently and even transferred that over to the card. It all adds up.

I'd love it to be gone by Xmas still but in the current situation I can't necessarily see it.

We have 1 card we've used since but ONLY put on what I know cam be paid off statught away like 40 quid or something if its to tide over until wages
