Wondering if any other mumsnetters working through the baby steps to get a handle on finances and interested in a support thread?

I am obsessed with watching his videos all day on YouTube!

nevergooogle · 07/05/2020 13:36

Excellent

I do like it when he loses his shit and tells everyone off.

I haven't been watching him on YouTube. How is he managing to contain himself when coronavirus proves he was right all along?

I completed baby step 2 today and feel such a sense of achievement after 18 months of being 'gazelle intense'. Grin

Yep. I'm on bs2. I estimate I'll be done with that by the end of 2021. Congratulations on being done with it, that's awesome!

nevergooogle · 07/05/2020 14:02

Well done. Just keep chipping away, it will be worth it.

Thanks. Yes, it will be. I'm glad I found Ramsay. So simple but a game-changer for me. I use digital envelopes. Helps me keep to the budget.

nevergooogle · 07/05/2020 14:15

Yes for me it's starting bank 'spaces' so I essentially hide my money from myself to keep to budget with none of it showing in my available balance.

Yup! Bs1 complete with more than £1k though as felt that was a little low for emergencies. Should complete bs2 by the end of june and bs3 hoping to complete by march next year. Then I'll start a sinking fund for maternity leave as I think I'll be ready to start trying my then.

tootiredtoclean · 07/05/2020 14:22

I love him. He has helped me clear so much debt. I've also watched Jordan Paige on youtube for creating budgets! Really recommend, although she's also American.

nevergooogle · 07/05/2020 14:22

Well done! Smile
I wish I'd discovered it all much sooner but so glad I did.

Ooh, what is this? I love a personal finance makeover!

nevergooogle · 07/05/2020 14:38

You are in for a treat.
I started with the money makeover audiobook.
Basically 7 baby steps plan. Highly recommend the book or audiobook for the full picture.

I also really rate these audiobooks for getting me on track.

I'm on bs5, but technically on bs2 we still have our student loans as well as our mortgage (I'm now prioritising overpaying that, but DR is more tailored for US and student loans here are a very different ballgame).

wildcherries · 07/05/2020 16:18

Sinking funds have saved my sanity. I swear by them.

nevergooogle · 07/05/2020 17:09

What counts as a sinking fund?

OP posts:
user1519475227 · 07/05/2020 18:33

Sinking funds are Annual costs or savings gs really so car insurance/ tax/ holidays/Christmas etc

wildcherries · 07/05/2020 19:15

I personally have sinking funds for gifts, Christmas, NYE, clothes and holidays. I put a little in them every month, and I never have to worry about not having money for birthdays, e.g. It's not a lot every month, but it adds up over the year. And yes, if I had a car I would have a fund for car insurance and maintenance. SF are personal to your circumstances.

nevergooogle · 07/05/2020 19:21

Got you, ok yes I have some of those for holidays, tax bill, emergency fund, school trips etc

Snowman123 · 07/05/2020 19:28

Yes BS3 and so glad with the current situation.
I wish I found Dave when I was 20.
Not that I'd have probably listened 😂

wildcherries · 07/05/2020 19:30

Exactly :) They take so much stress out of finances, even though some months I can only put very little in each one.

nevergooogle · 07/05/2020 19:33

Yeah I really wish somebody had sat me down as a teenager and explained how it all works. But I probably wouldn't have listened either.
Today so the first day in my adult life I can say I don't have any overdrafts, loans or credit card debt.
Wish I didn't learn so well from bitter experience and had some sort of foresight!!!

I love Dave Ramsey, I listen to the show on Spotify podcasts everyday (it's expecially relaxing to listen to when doing the ironing!)

He's completely changed the way I see money and now me and DP are both also "gazelle intense" and really starting to imagine how our life could be now we are living on a budget and being intentional with our money (got the lingo down to a T!)

For the first time since getting a credit card I'm paying off way more than the minimum payments and I can't wait till payday every month to see what we've saved from the month before that I can put on the card.

Also I have a soft spot for Ken Coleman, he has a lovely voice Smile

Yankathebear · 08/05/2020 14:40

We’re on step 3 which I’m hoping will be completed by December.
I have sinking funds for birthdays/Christmas, holidays, car and house. My aim is around £1000 in each.
It feels like such an achievement to be debt free and actually have savings. I feel in control and don’t have that awful anxiety of ‘what happens if the car breaks’ etc.
I lived in a financially abusive relationship for years and didn’t have much growing up so I am really proud of myself. I’m living within my means.
