Does basic Universal Credit include accommodation cost?

My 19 yr old DS has lost his job and is in the process of claiming UC until things change. As he lives in the family home is he able to claim for any accommodation costs, or does it come out of the basic level he is allocated?

He will not be able to get money towards housing if he lives at home, no. He will only get the standard £58 per week unless he is entitled to anything extra e.g disability allowance. It's ridiculous as it assumes that no parents ever charge their children rent, but them's the rules.

Ok, thankstherona. Out of interest, do you know if it would it be the same if an adult child over 25 returned home? Or I suppose it just is calculated on whole household income.

Your Ds will not get a rent element and if you yourself are on UC there will be no non dependent deduction on your rent element until he turns 21. If your 25 year old child returned home to live and you claim UC and get the rent element then there would be a non dependent deduction of about £73 a month off your UC.
Both of your sons can have their own separate Uc claims.

The income of the rest of the household won't make a difference to his UC as he is an adult and is expected to support himself.

I think the rates have increased by £20 a week right now so would be around £73 a week for him which is still a tiny amount to live on.

Standard under 25 rate is £342.72 per month.
