Hi,
I worked some KIT days in Jan, Feb and 1 day in march which were promised to be paid in a single lump in our March 2020 payroll "to make it easier" on our administrative woman. She forgot to pay it
When I called she pushed a manual payment into my bank account for the missing wages 2 days late (I.e. 2 days after normal March salaries go into employee banks).
But now I'm back I see what they've done in the paperwork.. it shows as "advance correction" in my March 2020 payslip. But in the April 2020 payslip (where I expect no wages as I haven't worked enough yet) it shows a minus amount for the same figure i.e. pay me zero.
So, I got the cash in March but for tax reasons it seems like it's counted as April..?! It shows £0 toy bank account as expected, but I've earned over £1k in April for taxable earnings.
Normally I wouldn't care but in tax year 2019-20 I was a basic rate tax payer. In 2020-21 I will be a higher rate tax payer.
So I think I'm going to be paying a higher rate of tax on that 1k.
Is that right, and if so would you challenge it / expect it to be compensated as if she'd not forgot to pay the wages..?
(I've simplified the numbers but trying to gauge my understanding / what's reasonable because I've all but been forgotten by work on maternity leave so this is yet another faff work-wise to add to my list
)
