Tax credits and child on year out from course

Ds (17) has just started his middle year of his course which is a year out working in the industry. He will be paid from now until he goes back to college full time in September 2021.

My child tax renewal forms landed today and I'm confused as to whether I can still include him in the form - one one hand he is enrolled on an approved 3 year course but on the other he is technically in paid employment although this is assessed by his tutors and counts towards his final qualification.

I don't know if I should include him or not - I really don't want to end up in the situation where I am overpaid - money is tight enough without having to find extra further down the line.

Any ideas?

What is the course OP?

It's a level 3 extended diploma in agriculture - a level equivalent qualifications

I think it might need a specialist advisor to look at it then. Course meets the requirements otherwise.

They should be able to webchat, and if they don't have the answer, they should be able to pass it on for someone to investigate.

I imagine he would come off your claim now then can be re-added assuming you still have a claim when he finishes the paid year. Do you have younger children too?

I googled this but couldn't find anything which covered your situation. Will your child still be living at home? I agree with getting specialist advice before completing the form.

He will still be living at home as his placement is at a local farm. Have 3 other dc as well (10, 13, 14)

I shall give tax credits a ring and have a chat.

As long as it's an approved course and he does more than 12 hours education a week you can still claim for him.
