Logistics of receiving a large sum of money?

At some point this week my dad is receiving a large lump sum, of which he is gifting £50k to me.
He is going to go into his bank once he has received it and transfer to me, but what I'm wondering is do I need to contact my bank at all?
I've tried googling but all I found was information regarding America.
Should I be contacting my bank to warn them I'm expecting the transfer? And will I be required to go in and prove where it's come from?
I would have thought such a large transfer is going to raise flags to my bank?
I have all the paperwork to prove it's legitimate just wondering whether I will actually need to go into the bank or anything.
Any advice is appreciated!

I'm not sure but my DH has been gifted (from either wills or parents) 3 sets of large sums. £50k, £20k and I think around £10k just before we met.

He never had to warn his bank or anything, they never called either to query.

It's coming in, not going out. It's fine, no need to do anything

When I was buying a house and combining my savings accounts, one of the transfers got flagged and delayed by security - it was about £15,000. I phoned the bank, answered some security questions, told them what it was for and they released it a day or so later.
Might be worth a quick call in advance, but I think a lot of the checks are quite random so notice of it happening might not make any difference.

When my mother had a large sum transferred to her, the bank telephoned her a week or two later to offer advice on which account to have it in

When I was due to receive £50k in inheritance I called my bank and they said there was no need to inform them but thank you anyway.

When I started transferring money places (kids savings, household savings, bought a laptop, paid off an HMRC debt), that's when they got twisty, blocked payments and called me. All I had to do was answer some security questions and confirm the transactions.

You don't need to do anything as it's going into your existing bank account.

If you were opening a new account you would be asked where the funds came from.

I haven't had a transaction of that amount queried before. My current account has a daily transfer limit of £30,000 using online banking but that's not relevant as you will be a recipient, not the person paying.

I would have thought the money should arrive safely in your account without you needing to go into a branch.

That's good to know thank you all! All I'm doing with it in the short term is paying off a small bank loan, transferring £4K to my LISA and buying premium bonds with the rest so hopefully my bank won't block any of those! Obviously not the end of the world if they do though, just didn't fancy a trip to the bank in the current situation Smile

As said upthread the bank will probably contact you to advise you to put it into a particular account in order to earn more interest £85k I was getting an extension done and needed ready access so it was a no from me!

getyoursocksoffhoney · 27/04/2020 17:24

@madmumofteens yeah with interest rates right now there's no chance I'm keeping it in the bank! I would have considered splitting it between a savings account and premium bonds but not worth at the moment!

Well good luck OP and enjoy your windfall 😘

They're far more likely to contact you about transferring it out, especially if it hasn't been in your account any more and you are transferring to someone/somewhere you haven't transferred money before.

Last year I had a short term loan from my sister for well over 100k. No problems, no problems paying her back 6 months later either but when I went to pay a tradesperson for doing my drive - an account I hadn't dealt with before, I had quite a long discussion with someone from my bank, first confirming my identity and then ensuring that I was paying the money for a service received and not being scammed. It was a bit of a pain in a way but I was well impressed overall/

I had 140k paid to me last month and spoke to my bank in advance about that amount coming in but I was told there should be no problem and it went through without any trouble. No phone calls or queries at all.I transferred 95% of that amount in various savings including a couple of large chunks to my daughter, all within a space of 5 days.No issues whatsoever.
