OH, FFS! LISSIES HOSPITAL UPDATE.

got a letter yesterday stating that they were in no way negligent. the reason ds was "stuck" and born by emergency cs was because he was back to back (the mw pointed this out at 35w) they didnt pick up the group b strep because it is an intermittant bacteria (but didnt argue that it had got into my womb through prolonged labour) insisted that induction was the preferable option to an elective cs.

my bladder was not misplaced (not what doc told me in feb) but had been distorted by adhesions. didnt explain why i had internal bleeding after laproscopy or how bladder got cut.

the worst thing though is that they said "we only have one record of miscarriage on record. i can only assume that any other potential miscarriages were early losses that were managed at home"
I DIDN'T WANT TO GO INTO HOSPITAL TO BE TOLD THAT MY BABY HAD DIED! I WANTED TO TRY TO COPE AT HOME!

what do i do now?

Oh lissie, I'm sorry

No idea what you do now but {hug}

x

did you see your gp for the m/c's , would there be any record elsewhere ? You can apply for your notes and enmploy someone to review them but it might be a lengthy, emotional and costly process

lissielou · 15/09/2007 11:54

each mc was managed by my gp with the exception of my 7w loss which was obviously too painful and the blood loss was too heavy to cope at home. theyve still not explained why my placenta had group b strep on it or how an infection that lives in the rectal passage and vagina managed to get into my womb. i just feel really sad and disillusioned. reaching the point where im too scared to try for another baby.

Think it might be worth talking it thorugh with gp in the firts instance and seeing if he/she would support you further. That letter sounds so dismissive of your situation and pain. I'm sorry you haven't got the answers you sought

ejt1764 · 15/09/2007 12:56

oh lissie ... no suggestions, just {hug} to you ...

I'm assuming you have already contacted the birth trauma association and AIMS - but if not, they may be able to help!

If your GP has records of your mc, then that is enough evidence ...

lissielou · 15/09/2007 13:00

thanks. i think now the best thing is to try to put it all behind us and accept that ds will probably be our only child

big hug for your Lissie ((((hug)))0
no advice but couldn't not respond

LIZS · 15/09/2007 13:17

how old is ds ? Can you ask for a referral to investigate the mcs?

lissielou · 15/09/2007 13:21

ds is 2 & 3m we are already seeing a specialist about the mc's and he seems to think that my cs messed me up quite badly, so why cant they?!

Only just read this ll. Is that the final statement from the hospital or are you able to take it further? Would you feel up to it?

lissielou · 15/09/2007 13:30

thats the result of the internal investigation. i can take it further but involves solicitors etc and i dont know if i have the energy

OP posts:
gibberish · 15/09/2007 13:32

That's what I wondered. Maybe you should leave it for a bit, get your head round it all and when you feel stronger then decide whether to pursue it further.

lulumama · 15/09/2007 13:37

not really very satisfactory is it, but then, they were hardly going to admit to a long list of negligence in the first instance. what does your solicitor advise?

can you get medical records from your GP to show you have had further miscarraiages, and also re teh op earlier this year

lissielou · 15/09/2007 13:38

that would make sense. got loads on at the mo anyway. it was just a bit of a shock. we'd known since 35w that ds was back to back. we also knew that he had tried and failed to engage at least twice by the time i was admitted with pre-eclampsia. am i daft or would that indicate that there was a problem. oh and there would always be three people at the table during a cs. yes but not all 3 trying to dislodge the head. i know the anaesthetist told me that he was a bit stuck. i feel so let down.

It might be worth finding out what the procedure to lodge any further complaint, timescales required and to establish that you are getting the right consultations to back it up in the meantime, even if you decide not to pursue it either now or in the future.

lissielou · 15/09/2007 13:43

i have a month to get back to them odd coz its taken them 3m to reply to me

No wonder. I know hospitals do experience problems with people filing suits for next to nothing and they have to protect themselves, but why some can't just bite the bullet and admit when they are clearly in the wrong and take any ensuing consequences is beyond me. I suppose they hope that most people will just drop the matter and not take it further. It's playing on emotions though. I can't imagine that all hospitals would act like this though. If they do as a matter of course it's very worrying.

lissielou · 15/09/2007 13:53

tbh tho its strengthened my resolve to (if we do somehow manage to have another baby) use a different hospital.

legally I though it was longer, maybe 5 years after the event ? Preusmably this is an internal complainst system . iirc there is a Mnetter whose dh works in medical negligence or personal injury.

gibberish · 15/09/2007 13:56

That would be understandable lissie. You probably wouldn't have faith in them to take care of you the next time.

Budababe · 15/09/2007 13:57

Did you ever look at the Zita West website Lissie? Has info on recurrent mcs
