Emergency tax question?

paradisefalls · 11/04/2020 16:57

I started my new job on the 27th February after being out of work for 5 years. I noticed on my payslip that I'd been emergency taxed quite a bit, so do I need to contact them or will I get a refund just sent to me?

It will usually be sorted by HMRC without any prompting. They can be a bit slow so if you want to speed things up I would contact them, especially as the overpayment relates to the previous tax year.

You don’t need to file a tax return or pay someone to do so Hmm

Presumably you would not have had a P45 so your employer would have put you in PAYE without knowing your tax code. Ask your employer what tax code they are using it should be 1250L presuming you have no other job or pension.

Once your employer corrects it the incorrect tax will be sorted through PAYE.

Go to the HMRC website and fill out a form R40. Please do not pay anyone to do a tax return in this situation! That’s terrible advice!

It will get sorted eventually but you can ring HMRC to get it sorted a bit more quickly. However, I can imagine you'd be on hold an awful long time at the moment so might be worth waiting if you can afford to

Payroll will sort it out soon enough.

Once your employer receives your correct tax code this will correct any tax you have overpaid in this tax year 20/21.

If you have overpaid tax in the 19/20 tax year then the refund will need to be sorted out by HMRC.

To speed up getting the correct tax code I'd suggest giving them a call.
