Child tax credit - does this sound right to you?

Hi all,

We have just had a baby and already have 1 3yr old.

Before dd2 was born we got £43 tax credit. Now she is born we get £80 something , but when she hits 1yr it goes back down to £43 as they take the baby elemnt away. SO I will get the same for 2 as I did for 1.

Does that sound right? I really do not get tax credits.

Thanks in advance

no idea tax credits are a load of faff!

sparklygothkat · 12/09/2007 21:53

look on entitledto.com

Dabbles · 12/09/2007 21:56

they should only deduct around a tenner (maybe 20) (rfom what i can remember) when she turns 1. ring them sounds like a mistake

evenhope · 12/09/2007 21:57

tax credits are based on income, working hours and number and ages of children. If your joint income is in the range of £40k ish then what you've described makes sense but I would second the entitledto calculator.

It just seems a bit odd that you have another child yet you get the same money - I dont understand how they work - why do they think one child needs money but tthe 2nd one doesnt? I just dont get it. thanks anyway

Nothing the Tax credits people do makes sense. We've had ours taken away, then given back. Waiting for them to take it away again.

That's what happens to us..... the 43 per month is the minimum - based on income (between about 27000 and 58000)and so it makes no difference how many over 1s you have.

EmmaJW1976 · 13/09/2007 19:34

Yeah, that is right.

I had £43 until my second child was born. I then had £80 or so until the first birthday, then it went down again.

Then it went up to £170 as DS1 started getting DLA but then it went back to £43 because DH had a £1k payrise a year.

What???!!!

nothing they do makes sense!!
