I am on maternity leave. I intended to return to work in 2 weeks time when my baby was 3 months old. Yesterday I was dismissed by my company due to the corona virus. Can I get the 80% offered by the government. These are very worrying times, any advice I would be grateful for.

I am no expert lumck but from what I have heard and read via the media - and especially Martin Lewis - I understand you would have to ask your employer to take you back for the period the 80% can be claimed and then he/she would be able to make the claim on your behalf.

This is perfectly legal and doesn't cost your former employer anything at all but you may have to wait until the 80% is paid which could be end April/May.

Would be worth going onto Moneyexpert website as I feel sure there will be something there.

Good luck and so sorry for the loss of your job. Extremely worrying times. 😥

No the 80% is for staff that are furloughed - still employed but there is no work for them to do. If you have been let go from your job the the options would be New Style JSA (contribution based job seekers allowance) or UC if your family income is low enough.

Help1653. Martin Lewis was saying he had checked this out and that staff who had been made redundant/laid off COULD ask to be taken back onto employers' books for the time being thereby enabling them to be furloughed.

Definitely worth checking out OP.

She can ask but as the announcement on the 80% was made a while ago now but she was only sacked on Friday the company are probably aware of it and decided against it.

Hmm! Pretty crappy behaviour by OP's employers then. 😡
