PPI demanding payment - is this allowed in the current climate?

Hi.

Just to see if if has been clarified if this has been mentioned anywhere? We received a pay out last month - by cheque- and cleared now. However would it be an essential bill to pay given that we are already losing financially - jobs at risk of furlough and money would tide us over? PPI company are very persistent and I know they will have bills to pay too. No one to speak to too as offices closed and they sent out the latest letter on Monday before the lockdown.

Is the situation that the PPI company processed your claim on the condition that you pay commission if received. You received the payment last month and now they want their commission?
What justification would you have for not paying?

coconuttelegraph · 26/03/2020 14:24

Can you explain a bit more clearly, I don't understand the problem. Is an essential bill some kind of new term. I've been avoiding the news for a few days so may have missed that

CandyLeBonBon · 26/03/2020 14:25

Afraid you need to pay it unless they say otherwise

dementedpixie · 26/03/2020 14:29

Why would you not pay them? They did a job for you with the expectation of getting paid so you owe them the money

Crinescene · 26/03/2020 15:39

Thanks I know they need payment however it’s a difficult time for everyone and government has put a moratorium on mortgages etc.

Surely any goodwill gesture a financial company may make in the current climate are for when people are facing severe financial hardship, not just waived/reduced whatever the arrangement is, because of the climate?

If you're facing hardship due to it then request it, absolutely.

My understanding anyway.

juicey09 · 26/03/2020 16:04

You owe them the fee, either do it now while you have the funds or wait and do it when money could be even tighter. the money you owe them will go towards paying the wages of the staff

coconuttelegraph · 26/03/2020 17:02

government has put a moratorium on mortgages etc

What do you mean by that? Mortgage lenders can't make new loans or borrowers aren't allowed to make repayments? Why would either of those be banned?

gamerchick · 26/03/2020 17:05

If you're daft enough to use a company then you can't just Welsh on your side of it. You need to pay them

Crinescene · 26/03/2020 17:43

Everyone I understand is going to face financial hardship and it’s going to be a delay in payment not non payment. Same with mortgages etc you can request to delay the payments not waive them. Yes to the poster who said it’s daft to use a company however DH went ahead and signed paperwork. At least we got something which is more than some people have right now. Thanks the poster who expressed sympathy for everyone’s financial plight in the crisis.

You've had the money, you need to pay what you agreed. You're pulling a fast one. You should have paid this lady month when you got it Hmm

DrFoxtrot · 26/03/2020 18:54

You've got money you wouldn't have had if it wasn't for their work. You need to pay them.

cabbageking · 26/03/2020 18:59

You got the money, a bonus, via their work.

You will have agreed to pay a fee or third even if they were successful.

You have the cheque and have absolutely no reason to not pay them the agreed share. Failing that they will take you to court for breach of contract and their costs on top.

They should expect payment regardless of the crisis because they know you have additional money from their work. Pay up

Whenwillthisbeover · 26/03/2020 19:25

I’m surprised they didn’t take their money when they acted for you, but since they didn't, absolutely no excuse, pay their dues.

slipperywhensparticus · 26/03/2020 19:27

Mine came via them not directly all 75p of it they let me keep it all under the circumstances Hmm
