Universal credit rise?!

november90 · 25/03/2020 11:44

The government advised that the standard allowance will go up by £1000 per year. Will this reflect in our early April payment or after the full month of April? I've searched online but can't seem to find any clarity!

I have posted this elsewhere but wasn't sure if it was the best place so sorry for double posting!

The rise will be from April 6th. Therefore, it will depend on your assessment period as to when you'll see the rise.

PorpentinaScamander · 25/03/2020 14:21

Is the benefit cap going up as well?

I receive working and child tax credit will there be any difference for me does anyone know. Thanks

PorpentinaScamander · 25/03/2020 14:33

That's helpful then @FallingApartNC

We already get less than the government say we NEED to live on due to the benefit cap. Now we will have even less Hmm

And before anyone says "get a job" I have one. But I've been off sick for a long time (my sick pay has run out). I was getting support with applying for ESA/PIP and then covid happened.

Absentwomen · 25/03/2020 15:11

The benefit cap has been lifted from.April 6th this year. This had been implemented prior to CV-19 pandemic.

This includes UC and the legacy benefits. 1.7% increase on WTC/CTC, housing benefit and job seekers allowance.

FallingApartNC · 25/03/2020 15:28

I know right, super helpful! @PorpentinaScamander
Mine is reduced by a lot for the benefit cap because I live in a high rent area. I've reduced all my outgoings as much as I possibly can, but even with only paying the absolute essentials... rent, council tax, electricity, gas, broadband, I have less than £50 left for everything else - food, toiletries, household, travel, clothes. It's just not possible. I can't reduce my outgoings any further, I've cancelled tv and tv licence, landline, mobile, contact lens subscription, netflix. With all the shelves being empty this last couple of weeks I haven't been able to buy the cheapest brand of everything I need because of course that's the first to sell out. That £20 a week raise in universal credit doesn't sound like much to anybody not struggling to make ends meet every month but it would have made a huge difference to me and many others but nope we're not gonna get it because of the fucking benefit cap.
And before anyone says "get a job" I had one and lost it due to redundancies and it's not been easy to find another which has been so great for my already crap mental health.

Oops sorry for the rant Blush

Flowers for everyone else struggling

FallingApartNC · 25/03/2020 15:31

Here you go, @FallingApartNC

PorpentinaScamander · 25/03/2020 16:01

Same with the high rent area.
Pleased to hear its being lifted. :)

PorpentinaScamander · 25/03/2020 16:03

Wait... that article says the cap remains? Unless I'm misreading it

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 25/03/2020 16:06

Funny, it was considered fine to stick it to the poor and working poor for years, hell, plenty of people voted for it. Now the virus is here all of the sudden it's not enough to live on. As if the poor, working poor and disabled haven't been saying that for years.

november90 · 25/03/2020 16:07

Thanks for the replies! I thought everyone's assessment period was the same 🤦🏼‍♀️ But mine should reflect my May pay in that case then as my payment is the 5th of April!

OP posts:
FallingApartNC · 25/03/2020 16:17

@november90 your assessment period starts on the date you start your claim so it's different for everyone

Thanks for the brief moment of hope @Absentwomen but as far as I can tell the benefit cap remains the same

Universal credit rise?!
Absentwomen · 25/03/2020 17:00

So the benefit freeze is lifted, as in the rate of benefits rising, prior to the pandemic by 1.7%. The additional £1000 per year brought in last week by the chancellor for new and existing claimants sees the standard allowance raise.

How does that then affect the benefit cap? If it takes claimants over the cap???? The cap is still £26k for London and £23k (approx) for test of country?

Apologies for the confusion above though.

FallingApartNC · 25/03/2020 17:32

£13k for single people. @Absentwomen

The benefit cap stays the same, we (those affected by the cap) receive the same amount as before and don't receive any of the April rise or the corona related rise.

And Boris Johnson will continue to loudly proclaim every damn day that he has given everyone on universal credit an extra 1k per year Hmm

Absentwomen · 25/03/2020 19:03

Okay.

I'll go and do some number crunching @FallingApartNC

Is 13k the total? Including housing costs? Standard allowance?

I'll be back. Grin

WhatAboutMeeee · 25/03/2020 19:14

Anyone know if it's for tax credits

FallingApartNC · 25/03/2020 19:19

@Absentwomen

Benefit cap for couple/with children is 23k in London and 15410 for single person.
For couple/with children outside London is 20k and for a single person is 13400.

Somebodyimportant1 · 26/03/2020 05:27

Dear OP, could you please kindly let us know if there is an increase in line with government announcement in the amount you get when you get paid pls. Thank you

FallingApartNC · 26/03/2020 21:55

Confirmation that the benefit cap will not change and many people will not receive the increase in universal credit or tax credit payments. Fml. Sad

@WhatAboutMeeee
Anyone know if it's for tax credits
Yes for working tax only , but it will still be reduced due to income so you may not see all or indeed any of the £1000.
