Ok, I NEED a job asap

Thing is, I am not sure exactly what more I can do to get one.

I can't be very flexible with hours I can't work, Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays or evenings.

I am starting college this week, one day a week, and so really would rather only work 2 days a week ie wed, thur , so that I still have 2 days a week left to do college work/housework.

However, the 2 days needs to add up to 16 hours for me to be able to claim wtc, without that, it just isn't worth it.

I really really need some extra money coming in, the kids birthdays and xmas are coming up and even if i spend the bare minimum I still need extra cash for them, plus both dd's have their hearts set on learning to play an instrument and have already signed themselves up for the lessons at school, which are £73 a term each, plus they've just handed me a bill for Brownies at £40.

I cannot not have a job, it's just not ging to work and I am not having the kids miss out on stuff because of me.

So, any ideas ?

join a couple of job agencies for start. They tend to know job market well and be able to tell you if you are likely to get the kind of work you want.

Does your college have a jobshop?

Look for work advertised to students.

Sign up to local job sites and see what kinda part time work they have going - if you store your CV on there, you can often apply through a click of a button, which cuts down wading through applications. I know this is the bristol site, but it has other sites linked to at bottom

Local papers tend to advertise jobs - often part time ones as well as full time.

Local shops, supermarkets (big chains tend to be more flexible) often offer the kind of work you are looking for.

Sympathies. I'm finding it hard enough to find a job with one child and full time childcare.

Cheers Armadillo, I already do half of what you have suggested but will do the rest asap.

theres nothing on NHS jobs is there? ( I know because im looking also!)

have you tried the jobcentre online one?

trying to think....

People have started looking for xmas staff I have seen signs in Argos, Tkmaxx and one of the mums at school was talking about M and S.

TheArmadillo · 10/09/2007 20:12

also - just remembered, have you tried the local council website? Usually list all local council jobs (including ones in schools etc). OUrs often advertises quite a few jobshares - so doing te kind of hours you are looking for.

If you don't mind telephone/call centre work (not all of it is sales) - somewhere like the RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland - big insurance provider) website might be worth trying, see if they have anything in your area.

Local universities? Their websites often have jobs, sometimes p/t or jobshare.

NHS site seems really quiet at the mo emma, as does the job centre site.

Alot of shops are looking for xmas staff yep, and I did ask in Argos and the Entertainer, but they want felixble staff willing to do extra hours if needed, and want them on weekends.

A xmas job would be a pain in the ass wrt to sorting benefits out afterwards, but if thats what I have to get thats it.

Bank work at the hospital?

TheArmadillo · 10/09/2007 20:22

I have the same problem - I apply for 3-4 jobs a day and haven't heard back from any. Very disheartening.

I finished my degree a few months ago, got a good result, but because I haven't actually worked for 2 years, adn cos my A level results are shite, I have no chance of getting a graduate job (as I have been told repeatedly) - too many grads and not enough jobs. SO that was a waste of time then.

I am looking at doing exactly the same type of work as I was doing before (basic retail type stuff) but now have less chance of getting job as haven't worked for 2 years.

Am not happy bunny at mo, and also in positin that we desperately need the money.

nutcracker · 10/09/2007 20:23

Bank work is no good because they can't garuntee me a set number of hours, and so I can't tell the housing benefit people etc how much i'd be earning.

I agree it is very frustrating Armadillo.

In the same boat, as nc and arma, it gets you down after a while. I've had a couple of interviews and been second choice for both aswell, not sure if that's worse than not getting a response tbh.

Whimsy · 11/09/2007 10:10

Nutty, the job I applied for are still looking for people. Helping out at UCE with students with special needs.
You choose the hours and days you work, 10-15hrs a week (but I'm sure they could make it up to 16 if you needed) £8 per hour.
I could pass your name on if you'd like .
