Handed in notice just before COVID-19 restrictions

Hi. Just looking for some advice please - my mum handed in her notice on her catering job a couple of weeks ago when things weren't looking quite as serious for businesses, as she had got a new job offer (also in catering). However, new job has now fallen through for obvious COVID-19 related reasons, so in a week she will now be unemployed. What, if anything, might she be able to claim benefits wise? Am so worried about what she's going to live on and just want to try and help her but have been looking on govt websites and can't really understand the process. I'm assuming UC is the most likely help available? Does she have to be actively job seeking to claim that? She has very limited access to technology so in the current climate she is unlikely to be able to actively progress anything job related, and due to her age am seriously worried she won't be able to get any jobs in the foreseeable future as there will be such fierce competition for jobs this will place her at a disadvantage 😢

Supermarkets are hiring in their 1000s, can she apply for one of those jobs?

Thank you, I didn't realise that was the case. Apologies, I should have mentioned thought while she's not over 70 she does have one of the risk factors healthwise, so am not sure she actually should be working frontline right now

Claim universal credit via www.gov.uk job seekers allowance

It's not back dated, so she must claim asap

Food shops, delivery drivers, carers are employing

I notice nhs are putting up adverts for catering jobs too. All these nurses, docs and other allied hps need feeding as they work round the clock. Probably on NHS jobs site.

If she's not employed she can't get an income or sick pay, it's as simple as that sadly.

What outgoings does she have and can they be reduced? What savings does she have? What benefits can she apply for?

@CheddarGorgeous she can get JSA.
