Coronavirus income effected how to pay rent?

Hello members

I hope all you are doing fine and your loved ones and are safe and healthy.

I do not work and rely on my boyfriend who takes care Ld the household. His income has been effected by the Coronavirus and he has been able to only make half of the rent money this month so far. Not enough for bills and Counsil tax.

Since I don’t work I also have not paid enough on NI in order for me to claim JSA my question is will I be allowed to receive at least a housing benefit, Counsil tax reduction? What are the benefits that I cooks claim If I haven’t paid any enough in the NI?

Is there a way the landlord will or may reduce the rent for the next couple of months during this time where many of us are affected until things pick up?
How do I go on about it?

I have read today that a new law ja been introduced that saves renters from eviction. But I don’t pay my rent for the next couple of months I will still owe the landlord and have no idea how I would be able
To pay back the arrears ? Landlord also get the option for a mortgage holidays which means they Hb’s the option to pause their mortgages until things pick up.

In countries like France for example, the government has suspended all rents, mortgages and bills until things pick up now in the UK Boris seems a bit slow in his decision making not really protecting individuals while protecting businesses.

Now I’m not expecting to live for free but at least have a reduced price on rent so I can afford to Pay other bills such as electricity and council tax (which has gone up again this year!) and put some food on the table.

I have been sorting my closed and looking for old stuff that I could sell but then not many people are buying at the moment... I’m also looking for other ways to make money from home during this time anyone that JS an idea I would appreciate.

Is anyone else in the same situations and can advise accordingly I would highly appreciate.

Thanks

You can claim council tax reduction if you’re named on the council tax, there should be an online form

Housing benefit is now UC

Dawnofanewmillenium · 21/03/2020 07:24

Now might be a good time to look into work.

Carers will be urgently needed.

ItWasntMyFault · 21/03/2020 07:40

Apply for UC at www.gov.uk/apply-universal-credit

Nearlyadoctor · 21/03/2020 07:40

Is there a reason you can’t work? Supermarkets are crying out for people at the moment.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/03/2020 07:42

There are definetly some industries crying out for staff right now. I'd look to pick up some work.

Momsmoms · 21/03/2020 10:35

@Nearlyadoctor unfortunately I can’t work in a supermarket at the moment because of the virus since I’m immune compromised. I have been told to isolate myself to protect my health.

I’m looking to work from home or maybe work in a field where I will not have to be exposed to many people.

Will your boyfriend be eligible for the 80% wages top up or is he self employed?

Momsmoms · 21/03/2020 22:09

@ItWasntMyFault can I claim housing benefit/ universal credit if I haven’t paid enough into NI ?

Universal credit is based on household income not NI history. You would both need to claim.

Icare1234 · 22/03/2020 13:42

Do you live together. Is your boyfriend employed and going to get 80% wages?

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 22/03/2020 13:46

Why can't you work?

Momsmoms · 22/03/2020 20:31

@help1653thanjs for that will definitely apply for it.

I would speak to your landlord urgently. Do you know their position, e.g. do they have a mortgage on the property? Is it their only property or are they a large scale organisation? The mortgage holiday has been extended to BTLs, but this may/may not help them. Without knowing if they actually rely on your rent as an income it's hard to advise.

Momsmoms · 23/03/2020 08:11

@Dinosauraddict it’s a property management company. I believe they own multiple properties and don’t think they rely on our rent for bills or anything since they got multiple properties.
