Covid 19 closures and nurseries want payment

Mums!

We need to get our voices heard: WE cannot afford to pay the nursery when our kids cannot go and we cannot work, got suspended or sent on unpaid leave because of Covid 19. My nursery is asking for 30 days payment based on our contract which is more than 1100 pounds while I couldn't start my new position due to Covid 19. My friend is sent on unpaid leave with ahving to pay for two kids!

I have written to Croydon MP asking her help and to local charities I work with, who support families. Please get in touch with your local MP and start stirring up some noise.

What's your notice period? Can you give notice that you're withdrawing your child?

Finfintytint · 20/03/2020 07:35

Just give them notice and try to secure a place again once this madness is over.

katmarie · 20/03/2020 07:39

Our nursery has advised they wont be charging for april unless your child is in the key worker category and attending. As long as our direct debit is still in place our childs place is secure. It's not clear what will happen long term though, I cant imagine they will be able to operate on a shoestring for very long.

MrsR90 · 20/03/2020 08:19

Notice period is 30 days, exact the same as the length they can charge money for even if they don't provide service in a situation like this. So no sense in giving your notice.

I do not worry about the place. I worry about paying a month worth of money while I and very many other moms are suddenly not making a penny!! Our kids were nursery so we can work!

OP, there is a whole thread over in the Coronavirus section regarding this with advice from a lawyer.

Are any of your children on the government hours? 30/15?

MarshaBradyo · 20/03/2020 11:37

What do they do if you don’t pay?

Is it in the contract?

Because if it’s withdraw your child you don’t have to worry about that.

ninebiscuits · 20/03/2020 11:47

@absent any chance you can link to the post? I've had a look but cant see it :/ thankyou

strawberry2017 · 20/03/2020 11:54

So what happens to the nursery staff when they don't get paid? And your child's place when the nursery goes bust because nobody paid.
Every decision made at the moment has a knock on effect to something else.
It's not as simple as just stop paying.
Don't make any rash decisions, speak to them about your concerns first.

Absentwomen · 20/03/2020 11:57

@ninebiscuits I'll try my best. I was following it yesterday.

Absentwomen · 20/03/2020 13:06

Shit. That's not the one I meant. Will try again.

MrsR90 · 20/03/2020 18:19

Thanks for the comments guys! I got local charities involved to start putting pressure on our representatives about compensating the nurseries and parents. I wish we could all get out of this dry somehow

Sorry to jump on this thread but I have a similar instance. Nursery has been closed during this period, advised they could not provide the service for me as they did not have enough numbers for key workers. Now they are looking to open next week want 8 weeks notice starting from the 1st July? Would I be correct in thinking that as they have been unable to provide the service and ha e been closed that the t and C's dont apply ? Just looking for some advice please
