New Job and Tax Credits HELP

Hi everyone

I am a SAHM and recently applied for a job as an ETA at my local school. The job is to cover maternity leave and is only temporary for 6 months.

My husband is the main earner and we have three kids who we get Tax Credits for. We only get about £30 a week so I'm thinking if I start working this will end.

I just wanted to know what would happen after 6 months if I was to make a claim again? would I have to fill in a new form? And would this be for universal credit? Or would they just reopen my old claim? Also under the new system, would I only receive tax credits for my first two children and not the third?

I am weighing up all my options as the job is only part time and only for 6 months. If it was a permanent position I would have happily said goodbye to the tax credits I get.

Thanks.

Yes, you’ll definitely have to apply for universal credit for a new claim

If the claim completely ended then yes you would need to make a claim for Universal credit instead. Some people are better off on UC particularly if working and everyone will eventually be on it.

Ok thanks guys. And in that case will the claim be assessed with only two of my kids on it?

The rules are also different for uc - your savings are taken into account, and uc reduced if you have over 6k in savings

I think uc is also for 3 children now, as long as they were all born before a certain date (ie when the rules changed for the third child)

Thanks everyone, you have all been very helpful.

Any new claims trigger Universal credit.

Universal Credit is available for more than 2 children if they were born before April 2017.

About Universal Credit

You can work out what you will be entitled to yourself with a few details. It's much clearer than Tax Credits.

Asvan · 05/03/2020 22:33

Is there a benefits calculator where I can check my entitlement for universal credit?

Not a calculator but this gives you the amounts you'll be entitled to and what deductions will be made so you can effectively work it out for yourself.

Calculators always seem to be way out in my experience.

Ok that's great. I really want this job for the experience but I wasn't sure if it would make me worse off in the long run. Thanks for all the input.

Not all new claims trigger universal credit. As you are already in receipt of tax credits, I would ring them to ask.

I receive child tax credits and if I get a job I can claim working tax credits. So not all new circumstances trigger universal credit.
