My house insurance has almost doubled!!

And I can't work out why. I paid £315 last year for buildings and contents combined. The comparison engines are normally cheaper than the current insurer, but they are quoting £580 min. Our current insurer is quoting £430 which is better, but is still a 25% increase. I expected a slight increase as we have recently made a claim, but this seems ridiculous. Any clues? Is it because the current insurer can see we've had 8 years no claims beforehand but the others can't? Anything I can do to get a more competitive quote?

It’s because you made a claim.

It'll be because you claimed but you'll probably find that if you call up and query the quote they may drop the price anyway. It's also worth trying your luck.

Ring them up. This happened to us a few years ago, and the insurer had decided we were in a subsidence risk area. We aren't. I went to another insurer and they had better, more defined, risk areas. Have you ended up in an update flood risk area, or subsidence, or similar. You may just need to shop around.

Not in a subsidence or flood area. It must be the claim, but the claim was only £700 by the time the excess has been taken off.

That's why then

No point making small claims for car or home insurance as you pay for more than the claim in the increased cost that last for the next 3 or 5 years.

I made a claim many years ago on a car accident. It taught me that over the years of increased premiums it would have been far better to pay it myself. I wouldn't now make a claim on house insurance unless well in excess of £1000.

Have you spoken to your insurers? They are the best placed to explain it.
