Family car - cost for car only pm

peanutbuttermarmite · 21/02/2020 14:16

What do you spend on your family car, per month? This is for the car itself not petrol or insurance.

Wondering what's typical, what the range is etc.

We're spending £370 pm to lease a car, we've a 4 year contract.

Nothing, we buy new and keep for 10-15 years. Works out far cheaper over the ownership period.

Lightsabre · 21/02/2020 15:10

My friend has a no frills Dacia Duster for £120 a month. Had to put a couple of K deposit down though.

CMOTDibbler · 21/02/2020 15:20

I have an 04 plat CRV. I paid £1500 for it 3 years ago, and its had about £2.5k spent on it since (brakes, suspension arms, air con, alternator), but is incredibly reliable and a great car. So, averaged out I suppose it costs me £100 a month including allowing for tyres and so on

Jessie9323 · 21/02/2020 15:21

I had a 5 year contract for £300 a month. Was so happy when I had paid it off!

Jessie9323 · 21/02/2020 15:22

That was to own it though. Not a hire

PhoneLock · 21/02/2020 15:26

We buy ours outright.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/02/2020 15:30

You'll get answers between very little and hundreds of pounds a month. There really is no 'typical'

Of course buying a new car and keeping it for 10-15 years works out much cheaper than leasing because for most of the time, you're driving an old car, not a new car.

Mintjulia · 21/02/2020 15:30

I bought a two year old car and have used it for the last 8 years.

£14,000 and I think it’ll last another couple of years so maybe £150 per month, fingers crossed.

cultkid · 21/02/2020 15:38

£260 pm on a lease on a VW arteon with 3 months up front payment

Lease for 2 years may extend it one more depending on when I have another baby

peanutbuttermarmite · 21/02/2020 15:42

Yes I think we’ve leased before because it seemed simpler but we should look at buying a 2 year old car outright aiming to keep it as long as possible by the looks of it - thanks!

I bought mine outright.

I leased a Skoda Yeti a year ago though. It was £190 a month with no deposit. The main reason I leased it was because it was such a good deal.

Frazzled2207 · 21/02/2020 15:53

We've always bought outright then sold privately after many years to part-fund the next one

mencken · 21/02/2020 16:00

just bought a nine year old car for 3k. So if it blows up in a year I'm still better off than the OP, and I'm still getting from A to B with aircon, radio, car computer, four wheels, brakes etc.

and on those lease costs I've got money left to service and fix.

obviously I don't know what kind of car the OP has but mine is big enough to get stuff and people in which is all that matters.

even buying new and losing a grand as you drive off the forecourt is cheaper.

WeAllHaveWings · 21/02/2020 16:07

We bought a nearly new ford focus estate in 2013 for £14500. Usually keep cars for 10-15 years.

So far nothing much has gone wrong with it, difficult to judge how much it will cost in mot and maintenance, a lot is luck, we'll be able to sell for a grand or two. So I would say < £200 month.

ivykaty44 · 21/02/2020 16:18

Got an estate car in 2013 that is 2006 cost £2k and still got it now, nothing major has gone wrong so just serving, MOT it’s done 140000 miles now 77000 in 2013

It’s probably got another 12 months

PinkSpring · 21/02/2020 16:31

We part ex'ed our previous car which we owned outright and then used savings and a small loan to top up to purchase price as we wanted something fairly high spec so needed to put extra towards it.

Considerably cheaper than using the finance or HP/PCP which both had stupidly high APR!

haveuheard · 21/02/2020 18:52

Spend about £7k on a 18month old Vauxhall Meriva in 2011, and just bought a brand new Dachia Logan Stepway for £11k. Plan to keep the cars until they are about 10 years old and get rid when the bills get more expensive.

We save up and then buy outright but also buy unfashionable cars so we get a lot more for the money.

haveuheard · 21/02/2020 18:53

Actually bought the Meriva in 2014.

MuchTooTired · 21/02/2020 21:04

We own ours outright. I got burnt badly in the crash with pcp, and will never have another car on finance in case my world changes suddenly and I can’t afford it.

I paid £6.5k 18 months ago for my car which is now 14 years old and have spent £80 on repairs so I guess it works out to about £360 a month so far. I’m not fussed about having a shiny new car, and I don’t think I could afford the car I have new on finance!

Bluejuicyapple · 22/02/2020 09:28

I only lease as I like a high end newish car. I do 4 years and pay £285 for an Audi Q3. I budget up to £300 a month and always manage to get something I am happy with for that. I don’t only drive automatic, non negotiable, so it’s a bit more but if you’re happy with manual it’s cheaper.

I’m looking at a Mini Countryman next or the small jaguar SUV which has some excellent deals. You just need to shop around and avoid main dealers, just use a lease company

peanutbuttermarmite · 22/02/2020 10:49

interesting @Bluejuicyapple - lease companies? We've gotten a lease through dealers before.
