TiReDmUmone · 01/02/2020 18:30

Hello I'm looking for ideas please on how people save money on their food bill and also some easy meals.
I'm wanting to try and save money to put towards a deposit so I can buy a house.
Thanks

Meal planning and portion planning is key OP. Keep it simple. Don’t buy items that aren’t necessary. If you buy juice, crisps chocolate etc then cut those out!

Switch to Lidl, and buy their own branded items (you won't save if you still buy big brands).

And stay out of the middle aisle!

Get a job or a second job where food is given free or reduced eg supermarket, restaurant

There are apps where local food is given free or reduced in your area

Supermarkets or markets yellow sticker reduced items, eat same day or freeze

Bulk buy rice, potatoes, toilet roll

I eat beans and pulses potatoes. Lots of garlic and spices make them tasty. Cheap food.

I batch cook a lot. It reduces the risk of going straight for convenience foods when you’re tired if you know there’s something nice in the freezer.

I only buy a takeaway once or twice a year.

Have other foods in the house that you can really quickly make a meal from like eggs for omelettes.

Meal plan then try doing a shop online sticking to the list of things you need for meals. Online it’s easy to find good offers on good food (DD and I are having organic lamb for lunch tomorrow that cost £4 and will do two meals!) and it’s easy to buy a 5kg bag of pasta/rice and tins of tomatoes etc. if you’re having it all delivered.

Snacks and soft drinks are hugely expensive. I now bake for sweet snacks or occasionally buy crisps if there’s a good offer and I’ve stopped buying juice/fizzy stuff at all.

If you have time or a day off do something like shepherds pie, cook 2 and put one in the freezer. Same with sauces for pasta. I’ve prepped veg, peppers and onions, for pasta/rice etc. Peppers in one ziplock bag, onions in other because I can’t eat peppers.

What type of meals do you like?

PityParty4one · 01/02/2020 22:45

Cut out take always all together.

I know it's a MN piss take but batch cooking is the key.
Cook on your days off then you can just reheat when you get in from work.

TiReDmUmone · 02/02/2020 21:23

@Adorabell I like lots of different meals my partner and DD are really fussy
I'm trying to cut out takeaways as much as possible
