Replacement car key

I've lost our only car key. Does anyone know how I can go about getting a new one? I think it's possible if you let someone (who?) have provide the make and model of the car.

oooh lurk

we need a new electronicy one and I have no idea where to get one

3sEnough · 01/09/2007 18:05

Have you contacted your nearest dealer with the VIN/chassis number - the long number/letters on the front windscreen at the bottom - they have lots of info on computer about the car.

SlightlyMadSCAREYthing · 01/09/2007 18:06

To get a new key with zappy bit for my Citroen I have to take a coded number to Citroen and they will order me a key for a horrific price (about £30+ I think). Then when Iget it I tahe it to a keycutter with my existing key to get it cut.

RustyBear · 01/09/2007 18:09

But what if you've lost your only key....

SlightlyMadSCAREYthing · 01/09/2007 18:11

Dunno - Changing locks time I would have assumed. May be wrong though

shreddies · 01/09/2007 18:11

I know... it is an old car - at least ten years, which I think might make it slightly more difficult.

ta slightlymad. Did you phone them or go to a garage or what?

MrsSpoon · 01/09/2007 18:43

We recently ordered a second key and it cost £100! However this was do-able as we had one key to have the new one coded from, if you don't have any key to the car you could very well be looking at new locks.

DontCallMeBaby · 01/09/2007 18:46

Not at all at £100 and I laugh in the face of £30+ ... just let me say, if you have a W reg Toyota Corolla or thereabouts, DO NOT lose the key. And if you must, then cough up, and DO NOT find the key three months later, you will feel quite sick.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 01/09/2007 19:04

We looked into this for our Nissan Primera and it was £100. And I haven't even lost they key - it's stopped working electronically and if you do it manually it sets the alarm off [bemused].

Millarkie · 01/09/2007 19:52

Kathy - my key did that (tried new battery in key and still didn't work) - mechanic said that it was the car battery at fault. We put in a new battery and it worked fine. (Which was a blessing because the neighbours weren't impressed with me continually setting off the car alarm)

We have to get a second key for my car (we still have one copy). We have to take my ownership documentation plus proof of id to the Dealership and order the key (about 60 quid) and then (about 4 weeks later when the key arrives) take the car to the garage and have keys/car re-programmed (which doesn't take long supposedly but costs about £150).
I would ring your nearest dealership and ask them if they can reprogramme some new keys wherever your car is.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 01/09/2007 20:01

Interesting about car battery Millarkie! We will ask when we get the car serviced later this month.
Fortunately mine is a second key - dh's is fine so far, so we are managing.

SlightlyMadSCAREYthing · 01/09/2007 21:34

I guess the debate has probably answered this....but I was told when I brought teh car never to loose this piece of paper as it will be needed to code a new key if necessary. I was going to quote £50 but I thought that wasa bit high. Am at £100.

NannyL · 02/09/2007 10:21

my father recently needed a new key for his car (a vectra) and his bill was around £100

I have just somehow managed to bend my car key (not sure how i managed) and it just about works, so im currently using the spare and desperatly hoping not to loose it!

fillyjonk · 03/09/2007 18:44

YAY I found me key! I am SO thankful.

crossing fingers for shreddies though...

sparklygothkat · 03/09/2007 18:48

I was quoted £125 for a new clicky key!!!

NomDePlumeIsIrrationallyAngry · 03/09/2007 18:53

A replacement key for my Ford Focus (not a plippy, electronic one) was £250. Yes, you did read that correctly.

A replacement key for my new car (Renault), which is an electronic key card would cost me £125.

glitterball · 03/09/2007 20:41

we were told to reprogram our key for Ford Galaxy (key works but only in the lock not remotely iyswim) would be £180-200 as we dont have the 'red' key - whatever that means....we decided that remote locking wasnt worth it. just have to hope we dont lose our only key as god knows how much a replacement would be!

charliecat · 03/09/2007 20:46

You can buy code things on ebay....to reprogramme keys..
