Tax and NI question...

Fiddlersgreen · 30/01/2020 21:58

Hope this is the right place to post this.
I started a new job and received my first payslip today. I have not been charged any tax or NI, I assume this is because I am still waiting for my p45 from my previous job which ended on 9th Jan.
I’m thinking of just keeping aside what the government website says I should have paid in tax and NI until the time comes that they want me to pay it back, is this the right thing to do? And will my NI contributions for the year be affected by this? Thanks

Usually if your employer doesn't have a P45/P60 they deduct emergency tax so if anything you would overpay tax and NI.

What are your earnings?

Fiddlersgreen · 30/01/2020 23:48

That’s what I thought, I was expecting to be taxed to the hilt until my p45 came through.

I’m earning £1516 now but have already hit just over £12000 this tax year from my previous job

Sorry, £1516 per month before deductions

I would speak to your payroll (or wait for someone with more experience to come along). If you underpay you're tax code might change next year to claw it back.

Not 100% sure about NI contributions as you might not have paid enough so don't get a full year for state pension purposes - but if you are claiming child benefit that will cover it anyway

Also, I love emergency tax when I start a new job. Almost always my new job has been a higher salary so I don't miss the extra tax deducted but then I get a nice little payout when it's rectified. Grin

Thanks. Yes I will speak to payroll tomorrow anyway.
I’m not claiming child benefit as hubby earns too much
