Monthly household bills

Hi sorry if I'm being really cheeky here, but I'm hoping to move into rented accommodation within the next few months and looking at monthly rent cost of £400-£700 PCM, obviously the higher end of the scale is a nicer/bigger home etc. I was wondering if anyone is able to give me a breakdown of average bills they pay in their home monthly like gas, water, council tax etc so that I am able to work out what monthly rent I am able to afford including all of the additional costs 😊 any help budgeting to move out would be massively appreciated! Thanks in advance Xx

Costs £950 for a double bedroom in a shared house where I am so 400-750 is low 😂

We pay around £400 in bills including council tax every month (broadband, water, gas etc).

Plus £400 on food separately

That wasn't a laughing face as in laughing at you just laughing at the pricing he'll that is London x

@LemonPrism haha definitely a big difference within the country! I'm based within the north east of England 😊 Thankyou for your reply!

We live in South west. 2bedroom flat. Rent is £625.
Council tax. Gas and electric. Water. TV licence. Broadband and contents insurance come to an extra £280 a month. But l get very good deals on on swapping suppliers every year. Council tax is highest at £160 for 10 months a year.
But we are 2 adults and both out most off day so bills would be higher if at home with kids.

Energy, council tax, insurance, boiler cover, sky and internet package =£380 in a detached 3/4 bed home.

To some extent it will depend on the age and insulation of the property. We’re in a decent sized 3 storey 10 year old 4 bed in the north east. As a family of 4 water is about £50, gas and electric £120 and council tax £150.
Are you planning to buy in the future, if so go for the lower end price range and save a deposit. Buying a decent house is within reach in the north east.

If you’re going to rent a property, the Estage Agent often won’t be able to tell you the cost of council tax, just which band the ctx is in

Remember that the closer to town/city center you live the higher in general the council tax will be

I’ve known people move from 3 bed house to 2 bed flat but 2 miles closer to center only to find ct has shot up

Also the quicker you register yourself for council tax the quick you get the bill and the more months it’s spread over

If you move for example in 1 February and you delay telling council, then you’d end up with feb and March charges put onto next years bill - which of course would make the bill higher monthly instalments
Go tell the council straight away and put away a rough estimate for the month of February and when the bill comes you start paying it straight away

Many people think February and March are free months- it’s a yearly/annual tax which is often divided into 10 monthly instalment. You can request to pay annually, quarterly etc if you should wish

Ask if there is a water meter, they’ll be a big difference between water bill and meter

Insulation of building - a 1930s house without cavity wall insulation is going to cost more to heat than a 1990s house with same bedrooms etc

Picking your property wisely could save you a few £££

There is a site online where you can enter your postcode and it will give you the council tax bands of all addresses in that postcode, then you just have to check the council website for the amount that correlates to. Band A is cheapest, with it getting more expensive in Band C, D etc.

Rent: 670 (3 1/2 bed house in Yorkshire)
Council Tax: 120
Water: 33
Gas and Elec: 60 (2 adults)
Broadband: 33
TV License: 12

There are also some private rentals that include some bills.
Heating costs will also vary depending on the energy rating of the property, how many people will be living there, end/detached/semi-detached/third floor, basement property etc.

Very easy to check CT www.gov.uk/council-tax-bands

Gas and electric combined is under 900 a year for a 3 bed in London

Water is in with my rent so I would have to check lol.
